Hi,
My brother has a neighbor in his 60s who is very "slow" (I don't know the PC
phrase). He is unemployed and lives on some sort of state (of Georgia)
relief including his medical care.
Anyway, slow man lives alone, is a newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic and is
just confused by the whole regimen. He has a glucose meter but they state
only gives him 30 strips a month so he is testing once a day. Not good.
Anyway, I have searched high and low for Tes-Tape, including internet
searches. No luck. It would be PERFECT for him in that he could test a few
times a day for relatively little money.
Was there not enough profit in it for Eli Lilly as compared to test strips
and meters?
If anyone knows where it or somethng comparable can be found please let me
know.
Thanks,
Sammy

It's no longer used. Not a very effective way of testing at all. By the
time the excess sugar reaches your urine, damage has been done to the body.
Testing the blood is much more effective and that's why it is used today.
I can't believe he gets only 30 strips a month if he is using insulin.
Something is very wrong.

Wal-Mart has some inexpensive meters and strips.

I was diagnosed with T-1 in 1971 and the good ole USAF gave me test-tape
for many years. When I finally got an Accu-Chek meter you had to use a
metal
lancet manually. I really hated that. A urine test-tape is considered
pretty useless
now.

Sammy, I just want to comment on what a good neighbor you are. Not too
many people would do what you are doing to help your challenged
neighbor.
Unfortunately, I cant help with the answer to your question, but I do
believe that good deeds need to be akcnowledged.

Sammy,
Yes, I remember Tes-Tape.
For achieving the bg goals commonly advocated by many here, it is
not particularly useful.
For stabilizing bg's that are in the >180 or >240 region, and when
there is no danger of hypos, it is better than nothing.
Fundamental problem: you get no reading on Tes-Tape unless your bg
was up above 180, high enough that you were spilling sugar in your
urine. And all you know is that your bg was that high at some point in
the past several hours (or however long it was since you last peed).

For that purpose, you could use the urine dip-stix (Diastix) easily
available from pharmacies (no rx needed), although a particular store may
have to order it as it's not exactly a big seller.
And while he's getting the glucose dip-stix, he might want to pick up a
packet of ketone dip-stix as well.

if he is a type 1 the state is only restricting him to 30 strips a day
because he has an idiot for a doctor who didn't write the script
correctly.

I am sure than man would like to live well beyond 60. He shouldn't be
testing his urine to just his glucose levels especially while
injecting insulin.
Help the man get the script for test strips written correctly and have
his doctor write a letter of necessity for testing 4 to 8 times per
days if the state paper pushers can't wrap their head around it.
Please do not advocate continued mediocre care.

I absolutely agree.
I'd also suggest they need to get him a CDE on a *regular* basis...
like every week for a while. This stuff is complicated enough for
those of us of normal intelligence to figure out.
