Before that actually. Originally was JBove but it left people wondering what sex I was. I first came here in 1999 when I was pregnant and was told I might have GD. I didn't post then. I guess I felt funny because there were no other pregnant women here and I had not been told with certainty that I did have it. I then came back in 2000 when I was told I had type 2.

I think the thing for all of to do is to think about what it is that we are hoping to accomplish by our being here... For some, it is obviously hoping to learn more about diabetes, for others it is about sharing that knowledge, for still others it is a matter of trying to be helpful and supportive, especially in the mental attitude and psychological ways... and for still others it is about finding common ground and friendship, while sharing our common humanity amidst the difficulties that diabetes presents.
I tend to think, Fris, that you are just as important as the most vocal, the most learned, the silliest, the most serious, and the most profound of us here. You very much belong with us, and I am very glad you are here!

Will, T2 - 06 Aug 2007 17:32 GMT > Will, I never read the book, but I did sisng the cats in the cradle by > Harry Chapin. > > any connection Hi Loretta,
Not really, Loretta, except perhaps incidentally as a source of inspiration in the creative mind of Harry Chapin....
Of course you know that the "cat's cradle" is a creation a person makes with string and a pair of hands.... really popular with children and adults. Chapin's song was about children growing up, change, lost opportunities of parenting, and regret.... Vonnegut named his book that, because that one of the characters in the story was playing cat's cradle when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, and went on to write a social satire about global change and disaster brought on by man as a result of science, religion and technology run amok.
Over the years since I first read that book, I sometimes find myself reminded of different aspects of it by things and conversations that occur in daily living. For instance, the hookah reference in this thread made me think of the implement of capital punishment on the island of San Lorenzo in Vonnegut's book... A big hook upon which the unfortunate person being punished was impaled.... It was used only every two year, so its main value was symbolic. The dictator, "Papa" Manzano over those who would oppose him by threatening with impalement on the hook....
