I found 2 values; 6.2 Hr - Plasma, 17.6 Hr - Blood. Which would be the effective half-life? I go see my Dr. next week and want to ask for multiple doses during the day, or an extended release. Don't have an Endocrinologist yet. Stumpy: Very smart question. If you can tolerate Regular metformin rather than extended release you are better off so far as effective blood levels. Extended release is a compromise due to GI side effects in some patients and also made more money as a patent extension for the drug company. Extended release is not absorbed so well and comes out the other end partially "dry" in many patients. The package insert indicates partial absorption. Many patients do not tolerate Regular metformin so I am told. Some of this side effect might be due to insistent intake of too many carbs which is contraindiacted in diabetes anyway. I take metformin R 2x/day with no problems. (2000mg daily). If I eat too many carbs some GI problems occur on occasion. I get mine a Kmart for $15 for a 3 months supply, that's 360 pills! They offer thi price fo rmany generics without any insurance. I us it because it is ess than the copay for my Medicare D plan and keeps me out of the donut hole longer. Don't have an Endocrinologist yet. Interesting question. I got a gastric reaction within an hour of taking the first dose; but it took about 3 weeks for a consistent affect on the bg. I felt more awake within a couple of days of stopping it. From that data, I'd say the plasma one. I took 500mg in the morning and again at night. Nicky. Hmmm. If you're not trying to win the prize for the fastest reaction - could you wrap them in something? I know they're the size of a horse pill... but for some reason a bit of salami came to mind. Might be too much cat-sitting a cat who needs 2 thyroxine pills a day, and hates the whole concept... there's probably a more appropriate method : ) Can't use fats, or you'll mess with the absorption. How hard can it be ? .. same pricing (to be eligible for health plans), but such an edge on the competition ! Imagine ... 85% chocolate coated metformin ! Just look at the liquids like amoxycillen, liquid tylenol, benadryl, etc. Then many of the chewables are flavored, as well.... Will, T2 |
