Thread rating: |
Cougar - 30 Jul 2007 23:48 GMT How do I keep squirrels away from my tomato plants? This is my first time growing, and I am having good results until now. They are in buckets, and doing great, except now for the squirrels. I don't really want to use pesticides, but I heard something about moth balls...how does that work, or any suggestions? Thanks, Kris
Loretta Eisenberg - 31 Jul 2007 00:13 GMT I am sorry Kris, but I havent the foggiest idea. I live on the 23rd floor and there are no squirrels up here and come to think of it, there are no tomato plants either. lol

Cougar - 31 Jul 2007 03:43 GMT We have so many squirrels here, that our local cable company has been out here 26 times in the last year and 1/2 to replace lines they have chewed through. I go out and find my tomatoes gone, half gone or chewed on. I have seen them doing it.

Well, for starters, you can't really keep squirrels out if they want to eat something. Are they actually eating the tomatoes? Or just digging in the dirt?
My philosophy is to feed them and hopefully keep them away from where I don't want them. They love fresh corn. Sometimes I'll toss out a couple of ears of corn. Or a handful of shelled nuts. Giving them nuts in the shell sort of defeats the purpose because they will bury them, most likely in your buckets. I've tried dried corn. They are supposed to like that but they don't seem to.

Around here, the squirrels act quite resentful if I plant things in their deck planters. They seem to be especially fond of lettuce seedlings, but arugula is too bitter for them. I eat a lot of arugula in the early springtime.

Perhaps the reason my veggies remain untouched...except for having to replant the cukes three times due to slugs, is that I have onions planted around the edge of most of the boxes? I learned this trick years ago and it keeps away most pests. They don't like the onions.

I know that moth balls repel some rodents, but the only tomato plants I have are in an EarthBox on my patio and the smell would repel me, too!
OTOH, if I wanted to use them, I guess they could sit on top of the plastic cover, avoiding leaching into the soil.
So far, squirrels haven't touched my maters; only the cherry ones are ripening.

DesertHare - 31 Jul 2007 03:57 GMT I know a good squirrel recipe that uses tomatoes. lol http://www.bowhunting.net/susieq/squirrel.html
I was told squirrels don't like daffodils since the bulbs and foliage are poisonous. I've heard that Fritillaria imperialis (another bulb) and Alliums (onion family) repel squirrels.

Mack, there is a restaurant in our area called "One fish Two Fish". They have really fantastic food there, and if you ever go, order the calamari. You will not be disappointed!
Of course, there are a number of other fine establishments around, but I just happened to think of that one, because of the excellent and memorable experience of their particular rendering.

Americans killed in the occupation of Iraq as of July 31, 2007 is 3,657. United Kingdom = 163 Other = 129.
How many more Americans must die to satisfy Bush's ego? Let us all pray for Bush - God knows he needs it!
As of Augest 1, 2007 it has been 1554 days since Bush while standing in front of the banner which was sent to the ship by the White House saying MISSION ACCOMPLISHED declared,"In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed." IOW MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Isn't Bush's "surge" of troops working well? Pay attention to the frequency of American deaths since it began.

The only time I had lobster it was at Red Lobster and if it hadn't been for the butter and lemon to dip it in there would not have been any taste. However, I have had Danish Rock Lobster there a couple of times and they were excellent.

You leave cat food out for the feral cats? Don't you know how much damage they do and they are carriers of feline leukemia and other diseases? Feeding them is illegal in many areas, as it should be.
The local humane society puts them in cat cages when they are brought in. If they are easily socialized to people they are put up for adoption after being spayed or neutered. The rest are euthanized.
I have heard of a couple of places where they catch them, sterilize them and release them back into the wild. To me that is a very bad choice.

The rabbit is probably the single most destructive animal to invade our continent (after man).
I've never understood why our authorities made possums a protected species. When I lived in Melbourne they caused major problems to householders when they nested in roof spaces. Not my favourite Aussie native animal.

We don't have many opossums either, it's too cold for their naked feet and tails.
Did you know there are schools in NZ that have an annual possum hunt to raise funds? One school raised enough money to build a new gymnasium.

So i created a garden circle with red brick edging and red wood chips and flowers in outer ring and a berry bus sourrounded by red lava pebbles inner ring..so the wire would still look out of place but better then the tore up bush does now...

I came around a corner in my back yard a month or so ago, and there was the woodchuck, looking like he was in deep conversation with the alpha feral cat. At first I addressed them as I do the cats, in a reasonable tone, and then the penny finally dropped that that was the WOODCHUCK and he was eating ALL my PARSLEY and was the reason I can't grow LETTUCE, and then I started yelling. Chucky and cats (there had been some hidden in the undergrowth apparently) started dashing in every direction.
I'm afraid it doesn't seem to have made a lasting impression on the Chuckster, though. Hmmm. Maybe that's why the cats have been giving me the cold shoulder this summer...
