Loretta Eisenberg - 30 Apr 2007 22:26 GMT Before lunch I was 102 I had chinese food for lunch
I ordered
won ton soup, which I took home to have for dinner
triple delight which is chicken , beef and shrimp with carrots, broccoli, peas, carrots with brown rice in a natural gravy, took half home
didnt eat any noodles
ate a quarter cup of pistachio ice cream
one hour after lunch I was 116
two hours later 85
This is how portion control works for me. It may not be for everyone,
have enough left over for dinner

Same junk all last week and probably next too.
I could eat my cars bumper about now.

Loretta Eisenberg - 01 May 2007 01:03 GMT Gene, why dont I see protein on your list and also some other carbs. Why is your diet so restrictive. I would be eating my car bumpers if I ate that diet.

I used to eat peanuts when this happened and it worked great for a year but that eventually raised my uric acid levels way up so I found another way to rest the digestive system a bit and that is this current diet.
My main problem is my stomach - it's trashed from years of great food and terrific beverages along with the occasional unplanned landing.

Gene - 01 May 2007 01:43 GMT > http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/breakfasts.html Thanks Alan.
It's my stomach that is dictating my meals these days not my meter.
And I know for a fact that water and air are ok so far but everything else is suspect:)

Gene - 01 May 2007 07:10 GMT >> Stomach problems > > I can relate but it would seem cantaloupe and grapes wouldn't be so > great for that! Julie, I have three doctors. Each is ok in their particular area. But each seems unable to take into consideration all of the issues when either asking me to eat certain foods or take a medication so that is left to me.
So I go with what I know about myself as far as what to eat. I know meats and veggies really bother my stomach and bread seems to settle it. A little fruit seems ok and I eat just a little. So that's what I'm doing for now. I might experiment when I can. When my Bg is down below 90 I add a little rice or grits.

Loretta, you use portion control and meds, not portion control alone, right?
Susan
Loretta Eisenberg - 30 Apr 2007 23:50 GMT Susan, absolutely meds, Byetta and metformin so that is probably a reason that portion control works well for me. My pistachio ice cream had nuts. Thats the real one to me.
I believe it is the combo of the meds and portion control that keeps my diabetes under control giving full credit to the meds. Of course, a person on meds, who doesnt watch what they eat, can still have high numbers.

Thats the real one to me. I agree, and not the chopped peanuts cheap brand put in there, they have to be real pistachios. I love when large, dark frozen cherries are added.

And with good portion control it won't mess up your BG control.

It's how it works for me too - except that the half you took home would probably have gone to SWMBO.

Americans killed in Iraq as of April 29, 2007 is 3,3516. United Kingdom = 146 Other = 125.
How many more Americans must die to satisfy Bush's ego?
As of April 30, 2007 it has been 1478 days since Bush while standing in front of the banner which was sent to the ship by the White House saying MISSION ACCOMPLISHED declared,"In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed." IOW MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Elizabeth Blake - 01 May 2007 02:50 GMT > Before lunch I was 102 > I had chinese food for lunch Last week I was really craving Chinese food, which I haven't had in awhile. I think I've had it twice since I got my pump 2 years ago. First time was at my sister's and I messed up my extended bolus (not enough for not long enough). Second time was at home and I did much better and even had one of the least diabetic friendly dishes, sweet & sour chicken. I don't remember how it went down but my numbers were decent for hours after & in the morning.
So last week I went into the take out place by my apartment and happened to see the back of the menu, which I usually ignore since it's mostly lunch specials and I'm at work when those deals are good. Besides the specials there was a "diet" menu, which said all dishes were steamed and served without sugar, oil etc. I ordered the chicken & mixed vegetables and took it home. Discovered that they're not served with oil, sugar etc because they're served with *nothing*. Just the steamed meat & veggies. I had a bottle of light teriyaki sauce in my fridge so I dumped some on. Measured out 1/2 cup of rice (also forgot to ask for brown instead of white) and poured the entire entree on top. Then I dumped in the other 1/2 cup of rice. It was very good and I didn't have to worry about what was in the sauce and what it would do to my BG. It's the fat that gets me in those sauces, not carbs.
I fell asleep after eating so wasn't able to test at 2 hours. As a Type 1, I don't test at the1 hour mark. My BG was 107 when I woke up some hours later, and when I woke up for good in the morning it was 99. Pre-meal was 79. I calculated the meal at 118g of carbs. I took out all the veggies and weighed them to get the carb counts (broccoli, water chestnuts, baby corn, carrots, maybe something else...).
I plan on doing this again and NOT falling asleep so I can test more starting at 2 hours or so. I do sometimes test at 90 minutes if I'm feeling weird. I also plan on getting brown rice and hopefull sticking to just 1/2 cup.
I was just happy to have Chinese food again and don't mind adding my own sauces since I can control the fat, and don't have to worry about hidden carbs.

We just skip rice, noodles or anything battered and fried, order without corn starch, MSG and added sugar. I usually have a dish with beef, shrimp, chicken and veggies and a very rich tasting brown sauce, my husband almost always orders beef with broccoli. I also order chicken with sauteed baby eggplant a lot.
If someone orders mu shu, I'll eat it without the wrapper, if we get dumplings, I eat the filling and not the dough.

No way to order that from the diet menu, though. I eat the pancakes since they're so thin and I just have to account for the carbs. I also love dumplings but the place by home has those nasty ones with really thick, doughy skins/shells so they're not even worth ordering. Even their wontons are way too thick. Sweet & sour chicken is the only dish I ever had from this place that I actually liked, but the steamed diet selections will probably be my new favorites now.

They are if you throw away the dough, the thick dough is very easy to separate from the filling.

Now I get unthickened hot and sour soup. I'm type two, no meds, so I don't eat any of the starch stuff, but there are a lot of excellent, low carb friendly dishes I can order at any good Chinese restaurant.

I can see throwing away an egg roll shell and eating the insides but since these dumplings are mostly dough, I'd probably end up with just a couple tablespoons of filling from one order. I'd rather just go to a decent place and get the steamed dumplings with very thin skins.

I rarely envy type 1's - but this is the moment. I cannot remember the last time I had a meal over 50gms carb:-)

As much as I love carbs, 118 for one meal does seem a little high to me, too. I think the last time I went over 100g was for pizza last year. Two big NYC pizzeria slices. I found some formula for taking fat & protein into account and so the total carb count I put in my pump wasn't actually all carbs. I think I entered 200g and did a split bolus. All of my readings from the first post-dinner check through morning were in range. I was thrilled, but haven't felt the urge to repeat the experiment yet.
