Dale - 30 Apr 2007 04:17 GMT Hi all,
New to this newsgroup and new to being diagnosed as Type II (diagnosed on April 7th, 2007). Hope to learn a lot and eventually be able to contribute to this group.

RB - 30 Apr 2007 04:37 GMT >Hi all, > [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > >Dale Welcome Dale, there's a lot that can be learned here. Some really smart posters and some who have a different message. You'll learn quickly enough who to skip over.
Many of us (Type II's) use various methods of diet and exercise along with the meds our doctors order to help with our control.
We are all fighting the same issues to some degree so pull up a chair and make yourself confortable.

>> Hi all, >> [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > smart posters and some who have a different message. You'll learn > quickly enough who to skip over. I think I have already learned of one 'Dr." that seems to be posting here as well as alt.health.diabetes
Was rather disappointed at how much time seems to be taken up with his posts over there.
> Many of us (Type II's) use various methods of diet and exercise along > with the meds our doctors order to help with our control. That is my goal, I have been trying to lose weight for years with limited success. This gives me more reason to get it done. I am in the process of cleaning my garage to make space to setup all of my exercise equipment (I spent last weekend doing lots of work cleaning and my before meal BS were below 100 all day, with my after meal BS being no higher that 155!). Proof that activity really makes a difference.
My current plan is to see what kind of progress I make on weight loss by the end of May, then use that info to help set a weight loss goal for year end. In my mind I am thinking that 40lbs should be doable.
> We are all fighting the same issues to some degree so pull up a chair > and make yourself confortable. Thanks! Looking forward to it. I wonder if any folks from here ever happen to meet in person for dinner or walking/exercising?

In my mind I am thinking that 40lbs should be doable. FWIW - metformin is one of the most frequently prescribed diabetes oral meds - you didn't mention if you're on it. It has a tendency to help with the weight loss to some degree - probably because it causes some level of gastric difficulty. Since I was diagnosed in June 2005, I have lost 20 pounds with metformin, exercise and diet. Don't know where you live, but I'll pass along one interesting tidbit - all the sources I can find indicate that showshoeing burns about twice the calories of hiking.

When there is loss of appetite from "gastric difficulty," there would also be concern about the possibility of the potentially lethal side effect of lactic acidosis.

To save any new readers time in learning what everyone comes to realize, the two pound diet is trash science and it is not a cure for diabetes:
The author of the two pound diet has not kept up with diabetes scientific literature, distorts valid science in pursuit of a non-scientific agenda, ignores science which completely refutes all the claims of the agenda.
In short, he can be ignored with complete peace of mind because the truth is not in him.
TigerLily - 30 Apr 2007 15:26 GMT Ray, i certainly have to agree that metformin is one of the 'first meds' that a diabetic should be given, because of it's diabetes effects, the weight loss effect (i had no gastro problems from the metformin, but i easily lost 10 to 15 pounds from Nov to the beginning of April), and it's cardio protective abilities
i wish OldAl were here to post still

Right now on sliding scale NovoLog during the day and Lantus at night. Trying to get my head wrapped around proper meal planing (I am a good cook, but never really learned how to plan a balanced meal), and increasing my activity levels.

Not quite a hop, skip and a jump... ;) I was fortunate enough to visit Sydney back in spring of 2002 for a short visit, want to go back one day soon, as well as visit your neighbor New Zealand.
Once I get mine fully cleaned out, 1/2 of it will be my fitness center :)

p.s. I see a number of folks have info in their sig about their status/meds - not sure I know all the abbreviations yet.

After the trial period it reverts to FreeAgent which didn't have killfiles. I eventually paid the money. I like it as a newsreader but others may be able to offer something equally good and free.
I see Jim answered you on the other question.

On Actos, Metformin, doing tons of research, working hard on diet, trying to get physically more active also. Some nice people here.
:) Ttyl, Kris
Dale - 30 Apr 2007 17:59 GMT Hi Kris,
> Hi Dale, > Just dx last month type 2. BS was upper 300's - 500's, and now in the [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > Ttyl, > Kris Congrats on those levels! Mine has been pretty much staying in the 100's, I will admit I get annoyed when it goes into the high 100's. I still don't have a good handle all of this.
Last night while taking my roommate to look at (and buy) a used car, we needed to run to an ATM, after walking around a bit, the tops of my thighs felt a bit numb, which seems to be one of my indicators. It had been about 5 hours since I had had a full mean, but had had a nice salad (yep, no carbs) about 3 hours earlier.
So I stopped at the closest fast food place and got something - 1 order of steak taquitos at Taco Bell and water). I felt much better within 2-3 minutes. When I got home 1 hour later, my BS was 138. Yet 2 hours later it was up to 178. This is the kind of thing that I don't get.
The taquitos are made with a burrito-sized flour tortilla, cut in half, with steak and a small amount of cheese. So that should be at most 2 carb portions. I don't get why my BS went so high 3 hours later.
Any insights?
Dale

For me, that would be way too many carbs, with a spike kept artificially high from the fat in the meal. I'm not on insulin, though. You might be getting a liver dump - where you go too low (or your liver thinks you might be in danger of going low), and so it pumps out tons of sugar to keep you going. Because your natural off switch (your own insulin-producing beta cells) aren't working right, it just keeps going, and going... until my bgs stabilised, I could double my bg in 10 mins. A real PITA - it took me months before I could exercise in the morning without my liver trying to be helpful!
Are you after some reading recommendations? If so, Gretchen Becker's Type 2 Diabetes; The First Year is a good primer.
Have you seen an endo? Do they expect you to stay on insulin? Sounds like you might be a candidate for just diet and exercise, at least once your garage is sorted : )

Loretta Eisenberg - 30 Apr 2007 15:26 GMT Dale, welcome to our group. You might want to talk to your doctor about it.

Dale - 30 Apr 2007 18:10 GMT Hi Loretta,
> Dale, welcome to our group. We would like to find out all about you. Nah, you really don't want to find out all about me, I might scare everyone away! <g>
A short summary: Just turned 46 (got out of the hospital on my birthday!), single, born and raised in Maine, have been in Dallas, TX since 1984, except for 4 years (1999-2003) living in Germany.
Computer geek, job hunting (see below). A Bear of a guy :)
> what meds are you on. Novolog before meals, sliding scale - basically 100-150 = 2 units, 151-200 = 4 units and so on. And Lantus 60 units before bed.
No other meds.
> diet and exercise help tremendously I have been doing better about walking my dog every day, walks range from 10 - 45 minutes depending on weather, timing etc.
Also trying to get the exercise equipment I already own all setup in the garage to make my own mini-fitness center.
Also making sure I eat more than I am used to, in the past I would often only eat 1 meal a day.
> but meds can > really help I have been on byetta and I have lost thirty five pounds on > it. You might want to talk to your doctor about it. I have heard about byetta, they were suggesting I wait a bit before getting on it. Give my levels a chance to settle down.
One other complication is that the small company I work for is selling off a big part of itself - effective today. Initially I was going to lose my job as of today, which would also mean no more insurance (We are too small to qualify for cobra), however, I have been given a slight reprieve, my job will continue through May, part time only, but with my insurance intact for May.
Going to get as much insulin as I can in advance with my insurance before it goes away so I don't have to pay full price for it.

That truly sucks. I hope you find something soon. Take care of yourself, because stress does not help when you have diabetes.

This is a good place to be with some smart folks that provide you with good ideas how to procede.
I wondered in here 2 years ago and it made a world of difference very quickly.
I'm a T2 on insulin and of course, diet and exercise and have my A1C's down to 5.0 levels.

TigerLily - 30 Apr 2007 15:20 GMT welcome, Dale to the group no one wants to qualify to join! :-(
glad you found us early, this means you are a self starter who is going to accept that YOU have the responsibility of controlling your diabetes, not your Dr, hairdresser, mother, or whomever thinks they know everything about diabetes (you will get lots of comments from total strangers if they find out you have diabetes :-) )
i'm sure you have tons of questions to ask, so i will wait to hear from you........ and i'm sure you will get lots of advice....... most of it conflicting, but by testing you will be able to sort out who can just 'shoot more insulin' to cover a meal from those who have weight control and blood glucose control in mind and who can't 'shoot more insulin' to cover a meal
take care

Welcome to the group! There is lots of good information and support to be had here. Remember, there is no one specific "right" way to do things. All of us have different methods, coping skills, etc. that work for us. You'll just have to pick & choose, and experiment to find what works for you personally. And the only stupid question is one that goes unasked.
Has anyone offered this website? http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/newlydiagnosed.htm It gives a terrific method for controlling BG with effective use of your glucometer. I encourage you to read it and utilize it. This is what many of use as a basis for BG management.
