Semi anual checkup - good, but could be better

Grandpa Chuck - 24 Apr 2007 04:04 GMT
I had my six month checkup with my doctor Friday. He said it was good.
I said it could be a heck of a lot better (and has been in the past).
My latest A1c was 6.7, which he said is pretty good. I remember a year
or so ago whenever I had the test it was hanging around 6.0. Actually
I expected it to be above 7.0.

I did tell him that I have not been getting any exercise worth
mentioning at all. The weather is much nicer now and he suggested I
start by walking only two or three blocks and so long as I don't
strain anything to keep increasing it looking for the elusive goal of
10,000 steps per day eventually. He emphasized to not overdo. He said
many people do that and then when they get hurt they just give up.

When he looked at my log readout from my tests he advised me to go
back to testing before meals most of the time. He said he's sure I
will see numbers more in the range we want to see. I really had not
realized how many of my tests were after meals when  I knew they would
be high. Then when I had a few that were over 200 I had become very
discouraged. He went on to say that the A1c indicates that when I did
go high like that I did not stay there.

Then to add insult to injury, as they say, my BP was 148/70. He had me
make an appointment to have one of the nursed check it again in two
weeks. He said, "Chuck, I know you can bring that down. Even though
you are taking four blood pressure meds we have always had a problem
with it being too high." He doesn't want to increase any of my meds
because he doesn't want the lower number to dip to dangerous ranges.

The weather has be fabulous here for the last few days. I guess it is
high time for me to be shed of the "winter time blues" otherwise known
as "cabin fever."

I know from past experience that I can get my BG and my BP both down
to desirable numbers.

Are you testing to learn from the results, or for
encouragement? If bad numbers upset you - better not to test
at all.

LOL
That is too funny for words. Well, almost. I had fallen into the habit
of testing 2 to 3 hours after eating rather than prior to eating. I
don't have a reasonable explanation. I started by eating to me meter
and somehow forgot if I don't test before eating something new then
the post prandial test isn't much good.

You know, Grandpa Chuck, you will still be kicking and we will be
trying to keep up with you! You have such a wonderful awareness of
your self that it is truly amazing. You know what you want and go for
it (lets just hope no one is in the way, they'll get runnover) no
matter how many butts you shred on the way. You also seem to have a
lot of stamina left in you. I am really amazed. Although I am
batteling a much different type of war with my body I still look to
you for inspiration. There have been many times that I wished that I
could be a type 1 or 2 and have nothing else going on. But no, not me
that would be to easy. As near as John and I can count I have 7 to 10
doctors that I see al least once a month, some more, and I am
currently on 21different medications that I use daily. That count is
temporary because I am going to try an injectable for my Multiple
Sclerosis and meds for figuring out my thyroid. Its up no its down. At
this point lets just get rid of it and will take another pill for the
rest of my life, so what. I am thinking of opting for surgery as
opposed to zapping because of everything else that is going on. I have
more diseases, illnesses, sicknesses than I can stand. I am on meds to
lose weight but this bunch of meds  makes you gain weight. I have
tried cutting some of them down and have not had good results. It
seems that what I am on now I will be on for the rest of my life.

I am sorry that this turned into a rant. Just frustrating venting. The
house has been on the market for almost 6 months now. When the current
contract with this realtor experires we are NOT renewing with them. We
are better off selling it ourselves. We have yet to find a realltor
that can explain the little quirks that this has. I'd be a little
quirky after 100 years, too.

Good luck, Grandpa Chuck in everything you try. And certainly don't
let them push you around. they may end up in you bed!!!!

Thank you Michele. I happen to be very fortunate to have a wife that
is with me 100%. She encourages me at every turn and is never
critical. If I say something derogatory about my weight she tells me
to stop doing that and she loves me just the way I am.

I will tell a little something funny that I did a few short years ago.
Laurie is very quick to let me know if an attractive lady happens to
be walking by. She is so secure that she doesn't have a jealous bone
in her body. She told me that she likes to see attractive men in those
little shorts when they are jogging and men in spandex riding shorts
on a bicycle. So I decided to give her a little treat and a good laugh
at the same time. Without telling her I bought a pair of the spandex
riding shorts. That night after we were in bed I said I had forgotten
something, so I got up, went into the bathroom and put them on. Now
you need to know that I am five foot five inches tall and at the time
weighed 200 pounds. (Are you getting the picture?) I waltzed back in
the bedroom and said, "Well Honey what do you think?" I thought she
would fall out of bed she was laughing so hard. She did say they were
a bit slimming but she hoped I wouldn't wear them outside.

Well friends, keep on keeping on and always leave them laughing.

I own a cheapy airwalker that I use over the winter if the weather's
vile - it's light enough to be semi-portable, so I can set it up in
front of the TV then pack it away. It's also been marvelous keeping
hubby mobile without impact whilst we're waiting for back surgery for
him. Something to think about for next winter, maybe?

Well, yeah - you could use rose-coloured spectacles too, I guess -
what's the point of testing at all, if you're just looking for pretty
numbers? If you test at one hour after eating, and use that
information to help you work out diet and portion size of carby foods,
you'd have a better shot at getting that A1c back in the low 6s.

Chuck, if you know what caused the problems, and you want to you will
get those numbers down.  I was surprised that the doctor said 6.7 was
pretty good.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life as a diabetic.

My doctor's standards have never been as stringent as ours are here.
When my A1c readings were hovering between 6.1 and 5.9 I told him I
could not have done it without the advise and support I was getting
here and had I not been testing both before and after meals. After all
that is how I found out that I do not do well at all on white rice and
some other foods.

Just had a friend with the same A1c of 6.7 too. He said the Doc was
thrilled that he was under 7, so my friend was thrilled too. He's one
of those friends I mentioned that gets testy if you say anything, so I
didn't. Funny thing is, his name is Chuck too, actually Charles, but
called Chuck. He's 73 though. :-)

What did it used to be? Maybe <7 *is* good for him.

I believe it was pretty close to the same, since we had a discussion
about it then. He is not one to hear anyone but the doc, so that's
fine. I still think the doc can be thrilled, and tell him he has more
to do for more improvement. But hey, it's certainly fine with me,
since he pretty much eats what he wants to, and doesn't want to hear
much else. He hasn't been diagnosed that long, a couple of years now,
and he's not on meds, so dunno what the thinking is.

All of the Drs. I've seen think anything <7.0 is excellent.

I believe for a very long time that was the goal they wanted T2
patients to hit. Now, according to my doctor it is 6.5.

I also think it depends on the lab.  Each lab has its own range.

I read that eating oranges or other acidic citrus will lower your HBA1C.  My
doctor agreed.  So, *if* you can eat some oranges between tests, you can lower
your HBA1C.  :)

Best of luck in meeting your goals.
