I have been having fun (yeah, right) with my new meter, and most FBG
readings have been in the 92 to 117 range.
An hour after breakfast, the range is 167-182. Two hours after breakfast,
it's under 100. I am still playing with what to eat for breakfast so as to
minimize the sugar rise.
So far so good.
Dinners: before, usually 79 to 102. An hour after, 99 to 110 (possibly
because of a small glass of wine I have with dinner and a rather strict
diet -- broiled chicken, steamed veggies, diet pudding or jello for dessert,
.etc.).
So far (hopefully) so good.
Lunch: Not measured often because of a crazy daily schedule. The one time I
measured was 95 before, 90 two hours after.
But today I had the time to fool with it. I had nothing except tea (with a
bit of milk) between breakfast and lunch. And then measuring before lunch (6
hours after breakfast) the meter showed 121.
Why would it be so high if I had nothing between the meals?
Meds: Metformin, 1000 mgs x 2 daily.

What did you have for breakfast when it went up like that?

One morning it was 2 slices of low carb bread (8 grams carb less 5 fiber)
with soy cheese and 2 slices of tomato (went to 167).
Next it was the same 2 slices with 1% cottage cheese (182). Apparently
cottage cheese has more carbs than soy cheese.
Today it was one slice bread (same 5 grams carb) with a hard boiled egg.
Went up to 167.
I'll experiment without the bread this coming week.

Almost anything low fat has more carbs than its straight equivalent.
they use carbs as a filler. Fat also slows down carb absorption, so a
bit can be positively useful!

6g is my breakfast limit - and that includes milk in coffee. You might
be better off eating your dinner menu at breakfast, and trying
breakfast at dinner... if your pattern's like mine, you might be much
more carb tolerant later in the day.

I usually do bacon and eggs - possibly tomato or vegetable juice - no OJ -
that's what they give to folks who are hypo.

Read about gluconeogenesis.
Milk has carbs too.

If you simply stopped eating you'd think it would just keep dropping -
right? Your body maufactures glucose from other materials after a long
enough period - gluconeogenesis.

I'm on the same total dosage of metformin. I've found what works for me
(4x500) is: one before breakfast, one before dinner, one before bed and
one about 3:30 am - helps to keep me lower in the morning.

thank you for the perfect example of less carbs dont always = lower blood
sugar levels.
if you are new to the game and can and do real exercise you will find that
even in a couple of weeks the same
meals will give you lover numbers.

Jay,
Even a brisk walk in the morning aftr breakfast can do wonders. Before my
sciatica i used to walk 3/4 of a mile to my school two to three mornings a
week and home again later. It was early days with my meter and I took it
with me and tested at school. I could eat a cereal breakfast on class
days, but never on home days. that walk made all the difference.

Jay: I got carried away in this thread. You might want to read the first few
sentences then skip to the last 3 paragraphs ;)
Even housework works for me after breakfast. On school days it is the
busiest time between 6 and 7.30. I have my run usually from 5.15 til around
6. A small glass of tomato juice gets me by before the run. As soon as I get
home I wake everyone and while they are all fighting over who gets the
shower first I make my breakfast. Then it's on to making lunches, finding
clothes that have been in the same places for 7 years, getting Jasmine ready
for her special bus. As soon as all the kids are out the door I feel like
collapsing but I find if I do the heavy stuff then it actually gets done. So
it's on to making beds, changing linen if appropriate (like Jasmine ate
easter eggs she she found in her brother's drawers today and messed his
entire bed).
Then general picking up - most parents know what I mean - then doing
washing, hanging it out, bringing it in, folding etc. Then I vacuum most
Mondays as well as clean bathrooms and mop floors. I feel better after that
:) I hate seeing mess, especially bathrooms.
I missed aquarobics this morning because Jasmine doesn't return to school
til tomorrow (we had 2 1/2 weeks school break), the boys went back today. I
was supposed to have my grandson for the day but that hasn't transpired so
far. Probably end up with him overnight instead ;) I have somehow got back
into the sleepless night pattern of young babies, lol. In the meantime I had
intended to do a Maths assignment but somehow it has fallen by the wayside,
Jasmine is bored and doing wicked things that keep my attention on her ;)
Sorry Jay, I have strayed, yet again ;) Sometimes it doesn't matter what the
exercise is as long as one is moving! As breakfast seems to be your big
spike time then you have to either look at the diet more carefully or do
some kind of exercise straight after eating. You may not know that the
mornings are a time when type 2's (and some type 1's have told me the same)
are most insulin resistant (carb sensitive), so smaller amounts of carb
spike then where they may not later in the day.
You may choose to have an all protein breakfast and save carbs for later in
the day. You are going to pay the piper eventually if you keep spiking. One
day you won't come back to normal range. It is far better to prevent the
spikes even if it means spacing the carbs out more (I eat 9 or so times a
day for example) - I was advised to space out over 6 "meals".
Those early morning highs you are experiencing sometimes are a result of the
dawn phenomenon - plenty of explanations about that on the web.

Exercise is a part of good health diabetic or not. it does not even have to
be exercise.
you could just start off by doing things that are fun and involve getting
out of the house and walking around.
starting to exercise is very hard. it feels like your just doing hard work.
but after a while that does change.
the body adjusts and you just wont feel right not being active. you will be
bored just sitting around.
listen to your endo and doctor on the types of exercise you should do.
it will also make your diet easier to follow simply because you will be
required to eat more food :).
also
it will not only add years to your life - it will add - life to your years.
