Hi guys. Have a question for you.
As some may recall I am Type II, fairly well controlled.
Recently I have had a couple of moderated lows. Not a big deal
because I recognized what was happening and took action.
I have also had some pretty strong leg cramps during the night
recently. I know that cramps are sometimes helped with certain
vitamins.
The question, can low BG trigger leg cramps? I ask that because I
take a daily multi-vitamin and do not suspect a vitamin deficiency.
I don't think I have done anything else that would trigger cramps so
just wondering what might be causing them now.
Your comments are appreciated as always.

I found this on the web and I have also heard being low in Potassium will
cause them. I have heard High bgs will too.
What causes a leg cramp?
The exact cause of a leg cramp is not well understood, but there are some
risk factors that are thought to contribute to this condition:
Muscle fatigue
Heavy exercising
Dehydration
High weight (not necessarily obesity)
Electrolyte imbalances
Medications (statins, prednisone, others...)
HTH.

RB are you on a diurectic. If so that could be the cause of the leg
cramps. I am and take potassium to prevent the cramp. Talk to your
doctor about it.

Thanks for the info Loretta. Yes my BP medicine does have a
diurectic, that's one of the reasons for the daily multi-vit.
I have been on the same meds for several years, the cramp thing is new
(this past week) so I was looking for something that had possibly
changed.

Hypomagnesemia (low magnesium) from diuretic use can take from months
to years to become severe enough to cause muscle cramps.
Would suggest you ask your doctor(s) about this possibility.
May GOD bless you.

I tend to get cramps if I don't drink lots of water since Dx.
I wonder if the muscle tension could be using glucose while your sleeping
and helping someone already in good control to get a little low?
I have no idea but with the effect I get with exercise it might be a
factor.

Thanks Gene, I try to stay well hydrated. Have not stepped up the
exercise so don't suspect that as a cause.

I had really weird, out of the ordinary leg cramps (was also on a
multi-vitamin). I am pretty sure it was my BP med w/ HZTC because when I
changed meds, the severe muscle cramping stopped. I would get the cramps in
my calves and abdomen. It would happen when I was doing nothing but turning
over in bed in the middle of the night was worse, or sometimes when I
twisted like to pick something up or bent over...it was very painful and
scary.

My BP med has hct (probably the same thing as yours) and I do not get cramps
anymore. I had two days of it in the beginning and I started taking calcium
supplements and some dried apricots plus lots of water.

Hi Kris, my cramps have been in the calves of my legs only, so far.
Very painful in the middle of the night. Seems to happen if I point
my toes down.

No Salt a salt substitute is helpful when I get cramps in my legs or
hands. 1/4 tsp in a small glass of water always helps me. Works good,
works fast in my case. YMMV

I tried extreme low carbing for a kick start to weight loss diet. I was
plagued with cramps until I took a calcium/magnesium supplement. I did not
last the distance with the extreme low carbing so it wasn't a problem. What
kind of meal pattern do you have and what meds? I have never related a low
bg to cramps by the way.

I'm not on any extreme diet. I attempt to eat a fairly normal diet
but limit carbs to what I can handle per meal.
Meds; metformin, avandia, starlix, zocor, hyzaar, plus daily
multi-vitamin and fish oil caps.
Between the vitamin and salt in foods I think my intake of minerals is
good.
The only thing that has change is a couple of moderated lows recently
and I was wondering if they might have some impact if I had a low at
night while asleep and didn't realize what was happening.
Thanks for the info.

Keep in mind that I come from a chronic pain back ground. The combination or
calcium/magnesium/vitamin D provides the best absorbency of the calcium and
often relieves leg cramps. Vitamin D is critical for people who live in the
north where they get less sun.
