I have had this breakfast many times and each time I like it more.
While fresh and raw is better, this works fine for me.
3/4 of a cup of fozen blue berries.
2 whole grain rye crackers.
Light smart balance buttery spread <-- enough to spead accross the whole grain crackers.
I half cup of fat free plain yogurt.
I put the frozen berries in a covered pot and defost over a very low flame.
alot of liquid comes out of the berries and at that point I crumble the crackers
into the berry mixture. put in a small bowl and cover with fat free plain yogurt.
i guess you could even sweeten the berries with a sugar subsitute but I dont.
if i was to use low fat yogurt i would cancel out the buttery spread but that makes for a less wet mixture.
I have made the same dish using fiber one bran cereal for the extra fiber.

that should work well for me too, but I woudl prefer to use (even though
fairly expensive) fresh berries piled on top of the cracker and have the
yogurt separately.
Although it is winter, for some reason the fresh blueberries have been
less expensive ths year than usual. If use dsparingly on my regular
cottage cheese, fruits and yougurt breakfast hthey add a great deal of
flavor.

yes fresh is always better than frozen but not sure if it would be just as
moist.
I have never tried it.
the way i do it it kinda comes out like a healthy lil pie.
the coolness of the yogurt and the warmth of the blueberry, cracker, and
buttery spread. lol 5 years ago before diabetes just saying that would have
given me a face like i just sucked on a lemon. I sometimes use full fat
yogurt, low fat or fat free all depends. ide like to find a sugar free
version of vanilla yogurt. im sure they have it around here i just have not
seen it.
Thank you Wendy.

Have you looked for the Dannon Carb Control Yogurt? Dunno if they have
it in your area or not, but here in CA, it comes in Vanilla, Peach, and
Strawberry and is pretty good. I do especially like the Vanilla.

I find the totally fat free on anyting, yogurt, icecream, mayo, etc
usually tastes of the plastic from which I am sure it is made. Low fat
versions work for me and fewer carbs.

Dannon makes Light & Fit in vanilla it uses either splenda or equal,
not sure which. If you were in my locale I'd say try Giant Foods
store brand. But I think Dannon is pretty much nationwide.

A current favorite of mine is to use the vanilla with fresh
strawberries and walnuts. The Dannon is billed as 0% sat fat and 0%
transfat. I don't know what your sweetness needs are, but I find that
the light vanilla is plenty sweet and I don't add sweetner to the
berries at all no matter how I choose to eat them. That drives my
husband nuts because he seems to think strawberries are only palatable
once enough sugar has been added to create a syrup. Blech! Of
course, I'm considered an oddball by many because I also don't add
sweetner to my oatmeal or any other breakfast cereals. I don't add
sweetner to iced tea or hot tea which also gets people to screw up
their faces like I'm some sort of freak of nature. Coffee. Well that
needs a touch of sweetner.

You are right about vanilla yogurt being very sweet. I probably wouldnt
even use sweetener with the plain yogurt but cant help but think if i made
the warm fruit and whole grain cracker ( or bran ) mixture sweeter and with
the cold vanilla yogurt on top it would make for a tastey ( i gota have
something sweet) snack and be pretty darn healthy at the same time.
I now make only steel cut oatmeal. while when eating it i wouldnt mind
making it a bit sweeter. When shoping im not in the mood for it and have
only bought it once in 4 years. I am very happy with hot or cold apple
cinnamon herbal tea. I never add sweetener to those either or my coffe.
i will sometimes put cinnamon in my coffee or buy the flavored coffees. 4
years ago I had no idea how i was going to live with out putting sugar on
all those things I have daily now and dont miss it.
at the same time im not saying that if i did have sweetener in the house
that i wouldnt use it in everything.
thinking about how my taste buds have changed. It kinda feels good knowing
that I dont really miss the old days as much as i thought i would.
holiday time is a different story. I have yet to have a season go past with
out wishing i wasnt diabetic.
