Hi All

My son has decided to steer away from sugared sodas etc, but
has a physically demanding job and uses gatorade and
equivalrent drinks towards the end of the day for energy and
electrolyte replacement.

Do any of our athletes have any suggestions for a lowcarb
version of these types of drink?

I suggested muesli bars for the energy snack plus water, but
that wasn't well-received:-)
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

You can buy a low-carb Lucosade over here, that still tastes as
disgustingly sweet as the full sugar variety... you can also get
elctrolyte replacement sachets, that would shake into the sugar-free
drink of his choice?

For a US brand name, which might not help as much as a UK brand name, I
have in my fridge a bottle of something called PowerAde Option,
purchased after the last time I had GI troubles. It's like Gatorade,
without the garish colors, and without most of the sugar. It has
something like 3g carbs per 8 oz serving.

Thanks Nicky, Alice and Julie. I'll have to start him
looking around the supermarkets; at least I know there
should be some equivalent here.

I don't know about the brands you have there.  We have a couple of low-no
carb sports drinks here.

I guess I'm wondering why he needs low carb if what he needs is an energy
pickup -- isn't he using up the energy (carbs) as he goes, just as if he
were doing extended "exercise? Does he really lose all those electrolytes at
work that he can't get in regular meals (i.e. food & drink) before & after
work? I guess I'm getting at -- what makes him think he needs extra
electrolytes, not just water & a regular snack?

But anyway -- has he considered diluted versions of the sports drinks?
He may find recipes to make his own in running sites -- I know I've seen
some around somewhere.
Or does whatever he uses have to be pre-packaged?

Because he has been drinking Gatorade and similar - and I
tested him yesterday with a fasting of 6.1(110). So he's now
reviewing his daily diet options.

A highly physically demanding job with few rest breaks for
snacks. Liquid works and he's used it for years.  He now has
one of my old meters and will test after the next gatorade.
Possibly, with the work he does, it may be OK.

Most likely. People in very physical jobs tend to burn of
all those meat pies, hamburgers and chips :) First hubby was
a bricklayer, worked very hard 12 hours a day, 6 days a
week. He ate atrocious meals, liked everything fried, lots
of white bread, hated vegetables other than potatoes :) He
retired 2 years ago and has put on weight, wouldn't be
surprised if some of his lipids are up too. Second hubby was
in the army and within a year of retiring he was diagnosed
type 2. He was able to eat mountains of wrong food before
then. Physically demanding jobs have a lot going for them :)

What I use is typically lemonade (with artificial sweetner), and some
salt. I make the lemonade myself. Lemon juice has some carbs, if you
want more, you can put in some sugar. Add water to diluve
appropriately to tase. Fresh lemons !!

So -- is there really something to this electrolyte stuff? :-)
