Hello friends,.... and a special hello to New Yorkers!

Here is an interesting article about a recent study that indicates
that there are great health benefits to living in New York. New
Yorkers are not as plump as suburbanites.... How about that, Loretta
and Susan?

Aw Will, if only it were true.  I live in a very dense area and I have
never seen more fat people, including myself than in Brooklyn.

I do have to say I have lost 65 pounds since diagnosis in l999.

diabetes has probaby saved my life

It's amazing to me how little people want to walk any distance at all.
Now that I have type 2 diabetes, I like to walk more. I even make my
family walk more than they want to...but they know why I make them
walk.

Have you compared it to other areas?

As a former New Yorker, this makes sense. If you live in Manhattan it
is very difficult to have a car, therefore you have to walk more. The
stores are all within walking distance of your house.

An interesting fact--New York City, with less than 3% of the
population of the United States, accounts for 50% of the daily public
transit fares in the entire Untied States. Even though the busses and
subways get you close to where you are going, however, they do not go
door-to-door. So you have little choice but to walk more if you live
there.

True story: when I moved out of New York, I was parked on the correct
side of the street that morning. A guy asked for my parking space at
about 10:30 a.m. It took all day for me to load my car from my 5th
story walk-up, which I had warned him would be the case, but when I
left around 4, he was still waiting and took my space.

As I have written, I have had to curtail my exercise and walking because
of my sciatica.  As I live in manhatan and don't want to be a recluse, I
do walk to get to the bus or the market or whatever, even with the pain  I
do frequently sit down where I can,but keep going.  I foten find that I
have walkd more than a mile if I tote up all the blocks, here and there,
in the course of a day.  It is part of what I love about my city (not the
sciatica pain), the walking a viewing windows and other people and not
needing to use a car when I can no longer drive because of the wet macular
edema.

In addition, it is a great place to retire to as there are plenty of
places that deliver, like grocery store, restaurants (no just chinese and
pizza) and plenty of public transportaion so you don't need a car.

When I lived in Brooklyn I learned a whole new way of looking at walking.
And, I got fitter, from walking. And, I saw many people who were fitter,
from walking. It is a stark contrast to areas that are more car dominated.
