No, I haven't. Quite interesting. I wonder what the mechanism is, if those
organic compounds do cause diabetes.
Thanks for sharing this with us.

The radio said they interfere with the metabolism of glucose.

From the site above: "CARPENTER: Well, certainly there is nothing in this
paper that definitively identifies a mechanism. But we do know a number of
actions of these compounds that suggest possible mechanisms. When these
compounds bind to the liver they induce various genes. Some of those genes
are involved in regulation of glucose uptake into cells and we think that it
is that process that leads to this disruption of glucose regulation and
causes diabetes." Carpenter is the epidemiologist who was interviewed.
Most likely, there are several different mechanisms, because there are so
many compounds involved.
All of these lead to interference with metabolism of glucose.

You appear to have an awsome knowledge of the human body. Are you a
doctor or a researcher of some sort?

I changed careers. I was a phsycian and have done some research, including
this last August. Presently, I am science teacher.

Stupid question - why would someone go from being a doctor to being a
high school teacher? There is a shortage of *good* doctors in our
community. Plenty of not so good ones, but good ones are in short
supply.

Aha! Very interesting. Chlordane was listed as one of the pollutants. And
the water and soil on the military base where we lived on Cape Cod was
polluted with Chlordane. We did not drink the tap water aside from making
one pot of coffee when we first moved there. My husband called home after
we already began drinking it and warned us to buy bottled water. I used
bottled water to boil pasta and other things, but I did use the tap water
for bathing and even to wash fruits and vegetables with. Hmmm... Now that
I think of it, THAT was a bad idea. I simply couldn't afford to buy bottled
water to bathe in, or to wash my clothes and dishes. I was also given a ton
of home grown tomatoes by my next door neighbor when they moved out. I made
a huge pot of spaghetti sauce with most of them and froze it. We ate that.
And then I learned that it wasn't safe to grow anything in edible in that
soil.
Scientists (at least I think that's what they were) came out to the house
behind mine and put a meter in the ground to register something. Not sure
what it was though. And there was a website up (not sure if it's still up
and running) to track our pollution plume.
I was found to have GD quite early in my pregnancy. Actually, GD was never
proven. I failed the first OGTT and I was so sick from it that they decided
not to give me another. They just assumed that I had it. Given what I know
now, I suspect I was type 2 at that time. Prior to the pregnancy I could
not shake the thought that I had diabetes, even though I had no outward
signs and didn't know of a family history. I never mentioned it to the Dr.
for fear he'd think I was nuts. I've had this same feeling a few times
since with other people and come to find out they were recently diagnosed
type 2's. Weird!

Or it could be you have a totally different cause for your diabetes. Do your
former neighbors have diabetes? It could be that other pollutants set it
off or something completely unrelated to pollution. It is quite interesting,
but it is still anecdotal.

Couldn't say. Like I said, it was a military base and nobody stayed there
for long. We were there for 5 years, but only because I couldn't move. I'd
gotten pregnant and with the GD and other problems I was considered high
risk so the Dr. wouldn't let me move. Otherwise we'd have been gone sooner.
The house where they put the meter up never had anyone in it for long. The
people who lived in there were there for many 3 months at best. I didn't
really know many of my neighbors and wasn't in contact with them after we
left. Actually I am still in contact with one woman who moved there just
before we left. She didn't stay there long. Her husband got out of the
military. AFAIK she doesn't have diabetes.
