I know some of you have mentioned that you carry some kind of test
strips with you so you can check whether or not you soft drink is
really sugar free. We ate lunch today at our favorite restaurant and
the waitress brought each a diet Coke. Laurie has a bad head cold
right now, but she said, "I don't think this coke is diet." I tasted
mine and it did taste a bit off, but I didn't think it was regular
Coke. In the past if they accidentally brought me the Coke with sugar
I have recognized it instantly. In fact one day when I told them they
had brought regular Coke the waiter said he was sure he'd gotten it
from the Diet Coke fountain. I asked him to run a small glass and
taste it. He came back and thanked me because someone had crossed the
lines.
Being unsure today we asked the waitress to please dump what we had
and bring us two new ones, which she did without question.
I have never felt the need to test before drinking my pop, but after
today's experience I think it might be a good idea. After all, I have
found just which dishes I can eat on their menu without spiking and I
sure don't want to mess it up by drinking 12 ounces of regular Coke.
So, what strips do you use and do I need to ask the pharmacist for
them?
Thanks friends and neighbors.
Oh, Merry Christmas and Happy Happy Chanukah to you all.

They're called Diastix in the UK - not a prescription-only item. They're
just the old-fashioned dip strips you use for testing glucose in urine.
They're very cheap and very handy - I've caught non-diet drinks a few times
with them. You can also use them for testing food or sauce by putting a
little in your mouth to mix with your saliva, so the saliva starts to change
starches to sugars, then spitting a little on the strip. This can be done
discreetly!

You may need to ask them to unlock the cabinet for you :-) but they are an
OTC item. Just plain Diastix -- what they're made for is testing urine for
sugar, but they do a fine job on US soda. I've told several pharmacists &
clerks (including a few at fast food counters) about it over the years.

Now that is a really useful bit of info! Thanks. You would not
believe the number of times I have been given regular cola after
ordering diet at drive-thru fast food places. I have taken to asking
for verification when they are handed to me and I still get regular
coke occassionally. The young people who work in these places often
haven't a clue the amount of damage they can do with an error like this
so just let it slide.
