Decades ago I used to be liable to a variety of minor foot rot
problems which were very hard to get rid of. I reasoned that these
skin infections were due to the warm moist atmosphere inside my shoes,
so I took to wearing sandals outside and bare or stockinged feet
indoors. To begin with I could only bear to wear sandals in the
summer, and quickly shifted to warm shoes and boots in the autumn and
winter. But as the years past my feet became hardened, and now I wear
sandals pretty much all year round, except in heavy rain or when there's
snow on the ground.
The various skin infections and smelly feet I used to suffer from have
all long gone. I have very healthy feet, and the occasional wounds I
get from stepping on thorns or bits of glass heal quickly and cleanly
with no inflammation. Doctors are usually amazed at how good my feet
are.
I don't bother visiting a podiatrist. As a new diabetic I was sent for
a podiatric check up, but they were far less thorough in checking out
my feet than I am. I actually had to point things out to them that
they missed.
I do have foot problems. I have mild plantar fasciitis in one foot,
and mild arthritis and a bony spur on one toe joint, probably
exacerbated by the excess tendon tension over that joint, part of the
fasciitis problem. But I don't think those are related to diabetes.
I used to have some peripheral neuropathy in both feet, but since I
got my BGs down (note to Kurt -- by *much* more frequent testing than
the ADA recommends :-) that has receded to two small patches on one
foot which are still slowly receding.

I don't go to the podiatrist any more and won't go back. I went there three
times and the third time he cut my toe open in attempting to trim my nails.
He then told me I needed to rush out and buy some Betadine for it. This
kind of grief I do not need! He also refused to do anything for my toenail
fungus.
My nail fungus continues to stay gone on the right foot. The left big
toenail still has a bit but for the most part it is gone. I am doing
nothing now but occasional vinegar soaks and daily application of the lotion
with urea.

sounds like you got a quack. Mine has been excellent and taken care
of my feet better than I or any other doctor could have. Of course I
got lucky, mine also teaches at the medical school.

You seem to have a knack at finding the good ones.

I make it a practice to get to know a new doctor on my first
appointment and won't let them do any cutting - not even my toenails
if I feel at all uncomfortable.

You got in with a very bad podiatrist. I would be looking for another
one and might even consider legal action considering how serious such
an injury can be to a diabetic.

That is the one thing I do not like about the podiatrist. He only
looks at my feet and has a strong fetish to trim the toenails. He
does not check for neuropathy using the filament test. Reminds me of
a chiropractor back in the early 70's. The sucker would take whole
body xrays every few months and never look at them. Nothing but a
good revenue stream.

Persistent lil devil. Would sporanox be of benefit to you? That is
what solved my dilemma with this damn fungus.
