I have PCOS and insulin resistance. I am checked for diabetes every 6
months (fast glucose). It started out at about 100 and the last one
was 120. I am always thirsty, and always have to go to the bathroom.
I get blurred vision, and floaters all the time. My face flushes for
no reason. I have dry itchy skin and get recurring UTI's. Is it
possible to have diabetes and have a fasting glucose below 126?

I forgot to mention that if I don't have a drink with me all the time,
I can't consentrate. I get really edgy. Driven by thirst, that is all
I can think about, getting a drink.

My personal opinion is that you really need to check your numbers. What
was your A1c at last check, or is the MD only checking your fasting BG?

Oh, and (very important)... what does your MD say when you report your
symptoms to him/her? Because you need to be talking to them,
immediately if not sooner.

As well as getting a referral to an endocrinologist (& if you or your
insurance don't require a referral, just find an endo & make an
appointment -- there will be a wait anyway; or maybe your cardiologist can
refer you), can you find another primary *care* physician -- one who takes
you & your health seriously?

And who has an Urgent Care clinic associated with them?

Why not check with your doctor? To record A1c, BG's see sig.

Definitely. Many people (mainly women, IIRC) develop post-prandial
(after eating) numbers well into the diabetic range long before it shows
up in their fasting numbers.
I would recommend getting a meter and testing at 1 and 2 hours after
eating. Walmart and some others have cheap meters that work pretty
well, if you can't get your insurance to cover it.
Here's our standard advice to newbies:
http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/NewlyDiagnosed.htm
Have you been prescribed metformin? That should help your insulin
resistance as well.
Keep posting. I hope Susan sees this soon. She has diabetes and has
never had a fasting BG over 126.

Not over 109, actually, except once on one out of three meters that was
higher.

it's entirely possible, ask your doctor to perform a Glucose Tolerance
Test. That helps reveal how your system manages an input of glucose.

I have checked it after eating and it has been as high as 210, I have
never seen it higher than that. I am noticing now that i also have an
intolerance to hot and cold. I also get the tingling in my hands and
feet and sometimes in my lips too. I have had a gtt and it was just a
hair in the normal range. I have new DR that order an A1C and that is
not back yet. I have been having a lot of heart paplations and that is
why he ordered it. I was on metformin for a while, it made me sick. I
was hungery all the time, and blood sugar would drop into the 50's at
times. My cholesteral is high too just a little but it is still high.

Two random readings over 200 is diagnostic of diabetes.

I am waiting for the A1C to come back. It should be done before wed.
The A1C will show diabetes for sure if it is there right?

Not necessarily. A high A1c is cause for concern, but a low A1c doesn't
mean you're not spiking high. Other factor can also produce an
inappropriately low A1c. It's more info to consider.

Blurry Vision, going to the bathroom all the time, always needing to drink
something, dry itchy skin, these are some of the things i was going through
right before being diagnosed diabetic.
you might want to take a look at this page :(.

if i went to a new doctor and didnt tell them I had diabetes
they wouldnt be able to tell by my FBS levels or my A1C.

My fasting glucose was 120 and my GTT was in the 150's and my current
doctor considers those normal.

Well, he's a bit behind the times then, because it's been over a year
(two years?) since the cutoff for "normal" was dropped to 100 for
fasting BG. Between 100 and 126 is "impaired glucose tolerance" -- what
some of us call "early diabetes." The bottom cutoff for IGT had been
110 for years before that, so 120 hasn't been considered "normal" for a
very long time.
Can you get yourself referred to an endocrinologist?

YES. I have never had a fasting glucose that high, and the
endocrinologist estimates I've been diabetic 10-15 years, based upon my
symptoms (including development of PCOS in midlife) and fbg of only 109
for at least a decade. According to him, many diabetics have high post
meal numbers for many years before fasting even begins to rise above 100.
The facial flushing can be due to adrenal suppression caused by
hyperinsulinemia in PCOS; the PCOS literature has many references to
this occurring.
You should see an endocrinologist for complete evaluation, not just bg.

sorry you had to seek us out... but i do have a few questions for you
that might help you in the long run.
first off, who is treating your PCOS? you should already be seeing an
Endo for this matter.
exactly how were you diagnosed with PCOS? what is your testosterone
levels? what are your DHEA levels? your fasting insulin? (which is different
then a glucose reading) have you had your TSH tested?
reason I ask is because my daughter was dx'd with PCOS at age 15, she's
now 19 and I stay on top of her levels. She also has Hashimoto's which is
an autoimmune disease and I am a T1 diabetic. So, I understand how they
all relate to one another and how it needs to be a careful balancing act.
Reisa, T1 pumper using Animas IR1250
went in for a new a1c today!

Are you on medication? Sounds to me like you probably should be. Yes, I'd
definitely be shooting for values lower than that. Below 100 is good. Dr.
Bernstein ("Diabetes Solution") insists that a healthy non-diabetic runs
83+-5 - all the time except immediately following a very high carb meal.
Health Solutions - 12 Dec 2006 06:14 GMT
Hello,
Medication is really helpful in recovery from diabetes.
Medications that increase insulin production by the pancreas. These
include Amaryl, Glucotrol, and Glucotrol XL, Micronase, Diabeta,
Glynase, Prandin, and Starlix.
Medications that increase sensitivity to insulin. These include
Glucophage, Avandia, and Actos.
Medications that delay absorption of glucose from the gut. These
include Precose and Glyset.
Most type 2 diabetics will require more than one medication for good
blood sugar control within three years of starting their first
medication. Different groups of oral medications may be combined, or
insulin and oral medications may be used together.
I have read about this at
http://www.medical-health-care-information.com/encyclopedia/D/Diabetes.asp
It has lots of information regarding Diabetes.

IMHO - that's playing with dynamite - real good chance to burn out what
beta cells you have left.

G'day G'day,
An important question is why do want to know whether you have
diabetes. The official definition is designed to mark the point where
the condition is IRREVESIBLE ie incurable though controllable.
The official point is a fasting glucose of 7.0 mmol/L = 128 mg/dL on
two separate occasions. Other criteria can be used but this is the
common one. According to that criteria you are close to being
diabetic but not quite. This makes it important that you act
promptly. At the time of official diagnosis something like fifty
percent of the beta cells in your pancreas have died and there are too
few healthy ones to repopulate the pancreas with healthy one.
You still have time to do something about bringing blood glucose
levels under control and allowing the healthy beta cells to repopulate
the pancreas. That is something denied to most of us.
On a more prosaic note you will still be able to get health insurance
without a hefty premium.
IMMO, now is the time to act, not wait around for an official
diagnosis.
Best wishes,
