You have got to be kidding me..... I am very much a newbie to this
group and to diabetes. I come here not looking for know-it-all answers,
just advice and support from others afflicted with the disease. I take
what is said here, along with what my dr. says and what I am learning
about myself to try to cope and adjust the way I live so that maybe I
will live longer that I would without the knowledge gained. But
instead, it is appears to be turning into a frigging circus. Religious
promotion and then bashing of such, and then the people arguing about
who knows or doesn't know what is best for one or all. I can only hope
that I stumbled upon a group of children and this is all really a joke.
Well with that said, I can see that there is no reason to come here
anymore. Any help or knowledge that may be gained will just be shot
down by someone else with a bigger ego. I hope that any newly diagnosed
person that comes here looking for advice is able to see the bullshit
fairly soon and realize that they need to look elsewhere.

goggy...... welcome to the wonderful world of Dr
Chung who cross-posts between the christian group,
the usenet kooks group, the athiest group and for
whatever reason the diabetes groups ! ! ! sigh
most of us have killfiled Chung and those that
reply to Chung, so there isn't the 'noise level'
that you have experienced
when you see a thread that Chung has posted to,
just mark the thread as read and move on to the
next thread/conversation
this is the downside to newsgroups/usenet.........
you get kooks like Chung and can't do much about
it

I came here new after being diagnosed in June. I realized that the religious
freak was crossposting to about 5 different groups. I began to filter out
people I did not want to read. That's Usenet. Some groups out here in the
wilds of unmoderated Newsgroups are MUCH worse. I turned things around with
hard work, support here at home and what I got from this group. I'm still
here. You, of course, should do whatever works for you. I'm just sayin'.

I have put Kurt in my kill filter & taken him out & put him back in again.
Normally I don't name who I filter out unless they are an obvious troll, but
I'll make an exception this time. And, when Alan is arguing with him, I just
hit delete, reading Alan's other posts. If I could make an ASD Christmas
wish it would be that when Alan comes back, he filters out some people. <G>
But, still that's TWO people. There's a lot more of us.

Which really doesn't help to lessen the arguing at all, but hopefully it
made you feel better to get it off your chest. Stick around and post
often. There is a lot of good information here. :-)

It isn't a debate it's a full blown argument and mudslinging parade.
Don't like it...then fight the temptation to read it. Or take your
right hand and put it over your eyes, spreading your fingers ever so
slightly, and watch the train wreck from a distance. Your choice.
Best advice to you...killfile me and remove the temptation.

Sorry you're unhappy. Some comments from my viewpoint:
1. We are afflicted with Chung and his enemies. I wish they would go
away; I also wish for Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Men with about the
same expectations. This is Usenet; you take what you get.
Lurk on misc.health.alternative or talk.militia a bit and you will come to
regard the diabetes newsgroups as a breath of fresh air.
2. Diabetes is a deadly disease. I don't know when I will die but I know
that the odds favor me dying from diabetes complications; i.e. most likely
a premature heart attack. Trying to figure out how to not-die when the
odds favor premature death prompts heated discussion.
3. ". . . .I hope that any newly diagnosed person that comes here looking
for advice is able to see the bullshit fairly soon and realize that they
need to look elsewhere. . . ."
Sorry, but I disagree strongly with that. My experiences in this
newsgroup over the last 6 years coupled with my attendance at all the
Diabetes Expos and all the Diabetes Support Group meetings in my city and
the next one over convince me that the majority of diabetes care worldwide
is poor; rating a C- at best.
Endocrinologists are the pro's in diabetes care but they are spread so thin
that their impact on the bulk of diabetes therapy is just not what it ought
to be.
However, the posters to the diabetes newsgroups have seen the best and
worst of diabetes medical care worldwide. They read the latest medical
literature (we are still digesting the 2006 ADA Convention papers). If
you stick around long enough, you will be exposed to the newest and best of
the diabetes therapies.
Reading these newsgroups in 2000 made me aware that I had been using an
old-fashioned, crappy insulin regime. Based on my discussions with
posters to this group, I pressured my doctor to switch me to a more modern
regime I actually obtained some modern insulin and explored a new regime
even before approaching him. I was able to work my way through the new
regime because of interactions with people on this group. The changeover
from old-fashioned crappy to modern has allowed me to keep my HbA1c below 6
ever since.
The NHANES U.S. diabetic average HbA1c is about 7.75. Mine varies between
5.6 and 5.7. That level of success is directly attributable to these
newsgroups.

Newsgroups are like a library. You're not supposed to read every book
on every shelf. You're supposed to find the ones you like and ignore
the rest. Newsreading software can automate the ignoring for you by
making posts from certain people or certain topics disappear. Like any
library most is irrelevant or nonsense. It's your job to find the good
stuff for you.

Filter.
Read, listen, etc. and see how this fits with other sources. No one has
"all the answers".
