What is the maximum dosage for Metformin XR? I have been taking 1000 per day for 4 years, but the last few days my BG has been higher than usual and I can't eat anything that doesn't raise it. Anyone????Sandy Sandy, you might want to call your Dr so he can put it in your records if you both decide that you need to up the level. He may also want to put you on something else to take with the Metformin. My Dr. has put me on Byetta(Haven't started it yet) because for the last year my A1C has slowly started going up each time I have been tested. We're hoping taking the two together will level me off. rk, Isn't that for regular Metformin and not the XR? I thought the XR is 2000 mg per day. Anyone????Sandy This wasn't your question, but my suggestion would be for you to call your doctor and see if he or she would advise increasing the amount (and mention that you will be in for a consultation in late December). Anyone????Sandy The U.S. Physicians' Desk Reference asserts that 1500 mg/day is a "usual maintenance dose". However, you really shouldn't pull surprises on your doctor. Give his office a call (being sure to mention the nearness of your upcoming appointment) http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/rxdrugprofiles/drugs/glu1188.shtml [Metformin] ". . . .The usual maintenance dose ranges from 1,500 to 2,550 milligrams daily. If you take more than 2,000 milligrams a day, your doctor may recommend that the medication be divided into three doses, taken with each meal. . . . ." . . . .Glucophage XR [Metformin XR] The usual starting dose is one 500-milligram tablet once daily with the evening meal. Your doctor may increase your dose by 500 milligrams at weekly intervals, up to a maximum dosage of 2,000 milligrams a day. If a single 2,000-milligram dose fails to control your blood sugar, you may be asked to take 1,000-milligram doses twice a day. If you need more than 2,000 milligrams a day, the doctor will switch you to regular Glucophage. . . ." I know here in UK if I called my GP and they agreed it was deemed necessary to increase anything they would give verbal permission on the phone! Its always better to get medical advice before upping medication as there could be good reasons that it is NOT adviseable for you but only your Dr knows! Take care! Where a medication is part of a control regime where it may sometimes be necessary to vary the dosage in response to special circumstances, and it's not always easy to see my doc at short notice, I negotiate variations in dosage with him in advance. 1. Under what circs is he happy that I vary my dosage and simply tell him what happened and what I did at our next check-up meeting? 2. Under what circs is he happy that I vary my dosage and inform him of how and why immediately by email? We usually end up with a range I can vary dosage with on my own judgment (he may give me specific instructions on this), a larger range in which he wants to be informed immediately of what I do just in case, and a limit beyond which I should consult him first.
