hi everyone, my hair has been thinning/shedding like crazy. I take
thyroid medicine because I had my thyroid removed and I take diabetes
medication. I was on thyroid meds for 10 years before I got diabetes
and I have been diabetic for 3 years. has anybody else lost hair due to
diabetes meds? all my docs say these don't cause hair loss but I found
people on the net that say their meds have made them lose their hair or
at least it has thinned out drastically any help would be great. thanks!

You can look up whatever meds you're on at rxlist.com and check for side
effects. Also, check out askapatient.com.

All things are possible when it comes to meds. You haven't
had a baby lately have you? My hair fell out in bucketloads
about 4 months after the birth of all of my children.
Cheri - 02 Dec 2006 04:03 GMT
Mine did too. I used to have quite thick hair, and still don't have to
do a "comb over" but it's getting pretty thin. :-(

I also take thyroid meds and my hair did exactly the same thing once
I started on Avandament - asked my doctor about it and he thought it
was because my body was still reacting from the stress of a
pacreatitis attack and not the medicine, but I wonder. It stopped
about 2 months later.

Hair thins as one ages, and menopause has a lot to do with it. I lost
a lot of hair when I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto's but it
stopped and the hair regrew once I started taking the meds regularly.
Have you changed how you take your thyroid meds? Remember, you can't
take it with iron or with a multivitamin that contains iron, even if it
is chelated iron.

That's odd - I haven't had any hair loss at all since
diagnosis:-)

Has your doctor run a complete thyroid panel on you lately?

You may like to consider trying homeopathic remedies which can help
and are very safe.
You will need to find the right remedy among many listed on the
following link.
http://www.stormpages.com/saibabaserv/Diabetes.htm
Take a look and see of you can find something. Do email me back, if you
need any assistance from me

Unfortunately - he isn't joking.
Every so often we get a spammer here who actually is not
just evil and avaricious - but positively and directly
dangerous.
I had some time to kill so I listed all of the "remedies"
for diabetes symptoms on that extraordinary homeopathic web
page. Presumably it works on the "whatever doesn't kill me
will make me stronger".
In this case, the problem would be getting past that first
phrase "Whatever doesn't kill me".
I've put the full list below; I'm no chemist so those who
are can pick it apart, but even a layperson like me can pick
out a few that look positively illegal and probably lethal:
Adrenaline
Arsenicum Album
Arsenicum Iodatum
Belladonna
Carbolicum Acidum
Coca
Codeinum
Curare
Lactic Acidum
Morphinum
Natrum Sulphuricum
Nitric Acidum
Opium
Strychninum Arsenicosum
Uranium Nitricum
and the rest:
Aceticum Acidum
Argentum Metallicum
Argentum Nitricum
Aristolochia Milhomens
Arnica
Asclepias Vincetoxicum
Aurum Metallicum
Aurum Muriaticum
Boric Acid
Bovista
Bryonia
Capsicum
Carbolicum Acidum
Ceanothus Americanus
Chamomilla
Chelidonium Majus
Chimaphila Umbellata
Chionanthus Virginica
Colchicum
Crotalus Horridus
Cuprum Arsenicosum
Eupatorium Purpureum
Fel Tauri
Ferrum Iodatum
Ferrum Muriaticum
Fluoricum Acidum
Glycerinum
Glonoinum
Grindelia
Helleborus
Helonias
Iodum
Iris Versicolor
Kali Aceticum
Kali Bromatum
Kreosotum
Lachesis
Lecithinum
Lyocpersicum
Lycopodium
Lyssinum
Moschus
Murex
Natrum Mur
Nux Vomica
Phosphorus
Pancreatinum
Phosphoricum Acidum
Phloridzin
Physalis
Picricum Acidum
Plumbum Iodatum
Plumbum Metallicum
Podophyllum
Rhus Aromatica
Squilla
Secale
Silicea
Syzygium
Sulphur
Taraxacum
Tarentula Hispanica
Terebenthina
Urea Pura
Vanadium

I'm not on meds, so I can't help you with that.
I've never had really thick, lucious hair, but after I found out last
year I was diabetic, cut the carbs and got my BG under control, it was
like I turned into Rapunzel. It was thick and grew faster than it had
when I was a kid. Then a few months later (I've been so good, pizza
for dinner won't hurt), I went on an extended carb binge and almost
immediately my hair started falling out -- and I mean in clumps! It
was so bad that the drain in the shower got plugged up whenever I
washed my hair, and one day I felt something on my leg, thought it was
some soap or something, but it was a huge clump of hair. My hair
dresser estimated I lost 25% to 35% of my hair in less than two weeks,
and the only conscious change was my diet. Six months after that, he
said my hair was in better shape than it had ever been, and we thought
it might have been either the diet change or hormones (I dont' know
how old you are) or a combination of both. I've noticed that pretty
much any drastic change in diet goes straight to my head, so to speak.
;-)
Hope you get it figured out --
