There's a good explanation on David Mendosa's site -
http://www.mendosa.com/netcarbs.htm

I tend to avoid them - but then I certainly wouldn't want to eat the flour
in the cookies, either! : )

Nicky.

It's a type of chemical which is somewhat sweet but is not digested in the
same way as sugar so it tends to not spike blood sugars as fiercely as sugar
does.   The sugar alcohols are notorious for causing diarrhea.

There are some misleading aspects to discussions of sugar-free this and
sugar-free that.   Plain old flour produces twice as much  glucose during
digestion as table sugar.    Plain old sugar-free bread can blow us out of
the water.

I know this is an older post, but it has been months since I read the
newsgroup and this caught my eye...

Is this an estimation or opinion, Old Al, or is this a fact?  I was curious
because it seems that a small amount of white flour gives me more trouble
than a piece of candy with equivalent carbs.

It's a laxative and best avoided for many of us.  Keep in mind that those
cookies are loaded with carbs because of the flour.
