Could these be diabetes symptoms ?

Hi,
i'm 29 years old, 180 cm for 65 kg.
I have always been thin, with little muscle mass.

After eating a lot at diner, or after taking a large amount of sugar
(like a big chocolate tablet, or a soda) I feel extremely bad and
tired, as if my blood was "thick" and "poisoned": I can almost "feel"
my burning blood flowing trough my veins when this happens. I feel like
a pressure on my chest, almost as if my heart would stop and this is
often accompanied by a head ache.

It usually fades out after a couple of hours, but happens often
(altough not always) after large food or sugar intake.

So could this be symptom of diabetes ?

I don't know what it means for you, but this is exactly the type of
thing that made me think of diabetes.  And if I have my BG under
control, all of these symptoms (and more) disappear -- and pretty darn
quickly, too.  As soon as my BG goes up, these types of symptoms pop
up again.

Others will be along shortly with better information for you -- but
have you asked your doctor?

Never heard of symptoms like that.

Sounds like gas to me...but I'm
not a Doctor.

Ask your Dr. his/her opinion and
possibly schedule a Glucose
Tolerance Test:

Duval,

When a person is prone to diabetes (whether they've actually reached the
diabetes threshhold or are still officially "pre-diabetic), a carby meal
will cause his/her blood sugar to go too high, and when the body finally
gets the message it sends out a bunch of insulin and causes the blood sugar
to nosedive.  The nosedive makes a person feel tired and icky.  What you are
describing could be this phenomena.

Have you discussed the problem with your doctor?  Or do you have access to a
glucometer so that you can test your blood sugar at 1 and 2 hours after you
eat?

Get yourself a glucose meter and test yourself.  The only way to know
for sure.  This "pressure on my chest" could also be an indication of a
heart problem.  In my opinion you need to be checked out by a doctor.

Get a hold of a home blood sugar testing meter and test your blood sugar
at 2 hours after a meal.     Non-diabetics almost always end up at 100 or
less at two hours.

Wal-Mart has just about the best price on a meter and strips.    I think
they have a kit for under $30.    They might have a starter kit for under
$10        Or find a diabetic and ask them to test you at two hours after
eating.

Unfortunately,   many of the first symptoms of diabetes that are noticeable
are the result on irreversible damage to the body.    You don't want to
"feel" any symptoms,   e.g.    one symptom is premature heart attack.

It could be a symptom of some other important things. You need to ask
a doctor, sooner rather than later. In the meantime, however, I'd like
to suggest to you that feeling bad after doing something is nature's
way of telling to stop doing it.

If you're feeling a pressure in your chest - any pressure in your chest
- go and see a doctor.  Period.  Even if it fades after a short period
of time.

Take it from me... many heart attacks are not like the "Hollywood" heart
attack.

This past August I woke up early to go to my uncle's funeral.  It was a
warm morning, and I was sweating a bit.  I felt a little queasy in my
stomach, but I hadn't had any breakfast that day.

And I felt a small tingle/pressure in my chest.

Had it not been for the fact that I was going to a funeral that
morning... I would have ignored those feelings.  Looking back on it, I
had noticed that pressure in my chest on and off for the past few weeks
- and never gave it a second thought because it always went away within
a few minutes.

Turned out to be a "silent heart attack".  I called 911 and went to the
hospital.  I ended up having open heart surgery (a triple-bypass) to
repair 5 blockages in my coronary arteries.

I got lucky... many other people aren't so fortunate.  I never had any
of the "classic" symptoms.  No chest pain, no shortness of breath, no
weight on my chest, no arm or jaw pain, no burning feeling.  Just a
slight tingle, some minor sweating on a warm morning, and an upset
stomach before breakfast.

What saved my a.s was the simple image of my laying flat on the couch
(dressed in a black suit) with my family standing around me (also
dressed in black suits).  The symbolism of being at *my own* funeral was
unmistakable.

Take it for what it's worth.
