Hello, all you good looking special folks.

This might just be a temporary unrelated instance -  but I gave up eating
peanuts and stopped drinking diet carbonated sodas and started eating
Almonds and drinking a ton of green tea and using Olive oil a lot the last
week.

The last three days the only reading above 100 is occasionally the morning
reading and I'm eating more carbs!  Every test I am amazed at the reading
usually in the low 90's.

Is there such a thing as a remission for diabetes? Tomorrow I'm going to
buy another meter just in case it's a meter failure. But this really has
been a great few days even if it's a fluke.

A quickie you might consider,  One Touch sells a calibration solution
which you can use to confirm your units performance.   Your meter may
be similar.

Hi Gene,

Sounds like you have hit on a good plan that works for you, and you
have achieved great contol. Congratulations!

Sorry, though, I think you are still a diabetic, like all the rest of
us :-(  Hate to rain on your party....

Glad to hear you are doing OK these days.

Doing great Will  Here's hoping one of the few remaining gentlemen is
also doing fine.

Dang, no remission!!  :)

You know I have a feeling this disease is smart enough to need a constant
reevaluation of each 'plan'.

But it is nice to win a couple of battles now and then.

Well, Gene, as they say... every day is a new battle....

I sure hope you are warmer down in Georgia than we have been up
here....  For the seccond day in a row, it has been in the 30s here.

Keep your powder dry, and stay warm!

Will, if this election goes the wrong way ... dry powder may be more

I was Dx'd in Oct 2005 with Bgs over 600. I began using Novolog of 100+
units a day when I got my Bgs down below 200 in January of 2006 the endo
put me on 10 Units of Lantus and I was still using about 60 units of
Novolog for meals.

The Lantus went up to 13 units and the Novolog became only when I ate the
occasional higher carb meal overtime.

The Lantus is back to 10 units and I quit having to use Novolog for any
meals and the last three days my Bg's rarely go above 100.

The next time I reduce Lantus it will be to zero and that will put me on
diet and exercise.

By the way the, the 10 units of Lantus causes slight lows 60-80 at 3am
and are accompanied with a fine head ache and a wake up call. So I'm
thinkling it will be soon that I go to diet and exercise.

My stomach is finally healing, 20 lbs of insulin fat is gone and my
energy level is through the roof.

It's been a grand last couple of weeks and a super last three days.

I brought a new Flash (Free again at Walgreens) and its reading about the
same.

How are you doing Alan?
Your travel log was really enjoyable. It reminded me of what I wanted to
be doing.

Hi Gene

(That sounds so clean - I talk to a lady on the ADA forum
named Jeanne and have the same mental reaction when I type
hi Jeanne:-)

Glad to see you're doing so well. I suspect that it's more
to do with cumulative total lifestyle changes and the
insulin than with giving up "eating peanuts and stopped
drinking diet carbonated sodas and started eating Almonds
and drinking a ton of green tea and using Olive oil a lot
the last week"

Of course, most of that is good anyway; although I have no
problem with diet sodas.

I used to occasionally drink green tea, but for my other
affliction, not the T2. Maybe I should take it up again.

Thanks for the blog comment. It's been an intersting
experience. I'm experimenting and just added Ads; I'm
already planning a "Pyramids" trip to Easter Island, Peru,
Yucatan and Egypt and have to pay for it somehow:-) The
first thing I noticed was that I have no control over which
ads appear - so it's a bit disconcerting when things appear
that I disagree with; I now understand how David Mendosa and
others end up with ads for diabetes cures on their sites
when they obviously don't support them.

Anyway - whether it's green tea or almonds or just
discipline - it's obviously working so keep doing what
you're doing!

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

Gene,

Congratulation on your good results. As some one who is self described
Peanut addict I must say I fee sorry you depart with such bitter taste.
You should absolutely keep doing what you are doing as long as it works
for you but I find it hard to accept blame those bloody peanuts part
:-).

I still eat plenty of peanuts (1-2 cups a day) about a cup of almonds
and walnut combo. As I said before I soak the peanuts with the skin
intact and munch on them whole day as often as I feel I need to. Never
hesitating one bit. I do have huge servings of salad greens and at
least 6-7 colors in raw vegetables in my dinner.

Like you I too have been staying under 110 for most part. my meter
tells me that my 14 day avg is 95 and I take at least 6 readings a day.
I sure don't see any spikes. I drink regular tea 4-5 cups a day.

I take Metfomin alone. 500 mgx2. So in effect I am NIDDM. My trig /HDL
ratio is 1.76 and my BP is most of the time 95-100/65-70. I do brisk
walk about 6 miles a day.

My reason for elaborating is that Peanut is one of the very good cheap
food out there that most diabetes can eat as long as they have no
allergy issues. It is an excellent supply  Most don't realize that it
can be soaked in water and it becomes out right delicious. If you
insist on making it salty you can can add a pinch of salt on a cup full
of soaked  Peanuts (soaked for at least 4 hrs) and microwave them for
4-5 min. The more you microwave the crispier they get. Bingo you have
one heck of snack food. Almost no effect on your BG! You not only get
great proteins but you also have a wonderful source of Phytosterols
(62.3 mg) and MUFA (7 mg). Only Macadamia nuts exceed this but at a
price!

I know you had a few issues with peanuts by going for off the shell
factory processed ones. At least for others I don't want them to walk
away thinking there is some thing wrong with peanuts. If anything there
is plenty right about them as long as you don't go for the off the
shelf kind. Do some homework and you will be amply rewarded. At least I
am.

Cheers,

Anil

I have a touch of Gout and a jar of peanut habit was killing my elbow -
so I had to stop.

I do miss the little suckers.

That is what I need to do but I just convienently forget to eat any
veggies most days. Until my wife hog ties me and forces me to eat a plate
of plants.

For me to walk 6 miles a day there would have to be a very pretty gal in
front. I do 2-3 miles 3 days a week and do weights the other two days
then take the weekends off.

I wrote the peanut folks and told them how their nuts got me through the
first couple of months of being diabetic.  Thank goodness it was a female
that answered:)

How do you soak them? In just tap water? Is it the raw peanuts?

With all the LC/Non-LC diet wars eating rather large portions of
Veggies seems to have survived quite intact. So I am sorry I am of not
much help here for you other than tighten the hog tie :-). I always
liked them but then I ate them like a man. Now I go after them like a
wild cow!

Hmmm Why I did not think of that as an excuse to tell my wife? But then
again having returned to a better shape than I was when I was 25, I am
not sure I need additional bait :-).

You wouldn't happen to have her extn right? :->

Yes tap water is perfect. You do need to start with the raw peanuts
though. They look some  thing like this: http://tinyurl.com/yhoxvn

Pleasure talking with you Anil. Great comebacks. Hard to find folks with
a great sense of humor these days.

Thanks for the peanut pointers - I'll give it a try. I was going to
months and months ago when I first heard this from you but I forgot.

I think I'll have my wife out that on my head stone - "He Forgot"

Yep, but it does get annoying when everything these days is blamed on
Genes.

I'm lucky me and my wife can travel free on military aircraft. That saves
the airfare. It's a bit inconvienent but a neat way to bum around the
globe. I used it a couple of times to play golf in Southern California
during the winter.

Keep taking picture and having fun Alan.

Welcome to runaway capitalism.

I'm trying.

How about this about three hours ago I ate a full bag of buttered popcorn
and My Bg stayed below 100. I just checked it and it was 94.

Is that wild or what?

That's 40 grams of carbs according to the box. That would have normally put
me at 150-160 and I'd have needed 7 units of Novolog to counteract it.

Instead it's had almost no effect.

I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I've had a similar experience lately with my dinner. After a
lot of experimentation I've settled on breakfast (when I
remember to) and dinner (evening meal to some) for my twice
daily metformin dose.

A few weeks ago I had one of those "bugger it!" days and ate
half a large pizza for dinner; I fully expected to go over
10(180) - but I just nudged 7.5(135). So, about once a week
since then I've experimented in the evening - a slice of
cake, or some spuds with dinner - nothing startling but more
carbs than I'm used to. And the results have been great -
mainly under 7(126), often under 6.5(117) at one hour.

I'm not going to go overboard though, at least not until the
next A1c check.

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

Exactly what I am seeing.  I think it's worth investigating further.

I don't know if I'm up to half a large pizza yet:)

I'd classify that as worthy of ...........

enemy reflecting great credit upon Alan, Austrailia, and the ASD."

Flaunt it proudly:)

Gene, as I am sure the others have told you, there is no remission for
diabetes.  Perhaps you have better control or maybe there is some magic
to the green tea.  I think I will go and have me some now.  Sorry to
tell you that once a diabetic always a diabetic, but if you live by the
rules, you can live as long as anyone else.

Not good enough. I need to live long enough to insure my nitwit kids don't
screw up my grandchildren and make sure my wife is to old to go looking for
some nitwit to replace the nitwit she has now.

I figure 2050 will be a good year to leave. I'll be 100 and she'll be 87
and the the grand kids will be well launched.
