Not Cheri here, but my first dog, Sam, a collie mix, was on low protein
food for several yers.  Sometimes I gave him KD, which he got tired of
very fst, and then I woudl cook him up (in a pressure cooker) turkey legs
(cheap at that time) mixed with carrots adn other vegetables, sometimes
with rice (depending on how his stomach ws doing).  He much preferred the
home cooked food, which I sometimes mixed with the KD.

Hope this helps.

with dog food i always figured it had enough fat and protien so i basically
just add fresh veggies.
when i cook straight up for them its basically just meat, low carb veggies
and some whole grains.
they love when i use shredded wheat.  i will probably replace most of the
fat with fat from nuts and flax.  yes it helps.  i love my dogs and make me
feel good when people offer to help them.
i thought i found a good web site on making dog food last night but the link
was dead :(.

Well that makes sense Tom. I don't think a high protein diet would be
good for kidneys that are showing signs of damage, but I'm not a vet.
Are you going to make your own, or buy it? I would be really curious as
to what the vet told you to feed her. I hope everything turns out great
for her.

until i get the case of low protien dog food.  I am going to just serve my
dog a little less protien then usual and try to add a little omega 3 to
replace the calories.
once i get the low protien stuff i will see how much protien, fat, carbs,
ect.  it will end up being something like.
chicken breast
whole grains
omega 3
calcium
low carb veggie.
the prices here are crazy.  i spent $500 on this 17 year old dog in the last
month.
thats just 2 visits at $150 each, medications and exams ( its not done yet
either ) and believe me when i tell you that
she didnt charge me as much as she charges her other clients.  the hospital
is in one of the richest areas of Manhattan.  and one of the reasons i have
not been doing whats right for me is the money.
my co pays are $40 a visit.
i have no choice tho.. i must stay here in Manhattan :(.  last night my wife
and i worked until about 9pm.  good news is i think we made 3 deals :).

Damn Tom, those vet bills are killer. I think you have a very lucky dog
there. I hear you though. My dog has insurance, I don't. Course hers is
only $42.00 per month. :-) I hope your business is doing well and that
your dog does well on the new diet.

seems they could be just the begining.
the doctor called me last night and is worried about the increased
platelettes.
and also about her kidney's.  to find out what is wrong and how to fix it
would require
spending 100's if not 1,000's of dollars then after that one thing that
might need to be done would be a bone narrow transplant ( that was just one
example that she told me).
so i can basically pay for the studies but god only knows how much the
operations and hospital stay will cost.  I am not sure what I can or will do
but I am afraid that she will end up living her last years in and out of
hospitals.  I dont want that.  she is 17, she lived a good life and is
treated very well here.  i wish i had time to learn more about these
platelettes that clot blod.  the doctor also said that if it was here she
wouldnt do the studies and all that.  she just wants to let me know that
they can do these things.  i wish i had the money to do these things and
still be prepared for other suprises.  for now she will be taking a baby
asprin ever 72 hours ( i would like to give her 1/3 a day but doc said no, i
will have to look into that more)
and also low protien.  other than that i dont know what i will or what i can
do.  even if i do save her life now, she is 17 and this could just be the
begining  - whats next?  its a hard choice even tho i think it would be
impossible for me to do and not be left homeless. how do i say -
NO i cant save your life.   i wish i was a kid again and the hardest choices
I had to make with money was 2 six packs of schmidt's beer. or $2.50 for a
six pack and have another $2.50 to chip in on other goodies.  2 six packs
for $5.. those where the days - even if it was schmidts lol.

I know it's a really hard decision Tom, and I feel badly for you. Only
you can decide what's best, but sometimes you just come to the end of
the road no matter what you do. Nobody could ever say that you didn't
give it your best shot and I admire you for all that you've put into it.
Yes, there were a lot of advantages to being a kid. Our beer was Brown
Derby, at less than a buck or so a six pack. Ghastly beer, but fun days.
Take care.
