Flu shot's effect on cold

Thread rating: |
Priscilla Ballou - 22 Oct 2006 12:07 GMT I've had a cold for the past 10 days, and it wasn't TOO horrifically bad, although I did take a couple of days off work when the sofa looked just too enticing. Friday I was scheduled for my flu shot at work, and they said that as long as I wasn't running a fever it was fine to get it. I was rock steady at 98.6F, so I got the shot. The next morning, my cold had gotten MUCH worse -- sore throat back in force, massive amounts of gunk in my sinuses, achy face and neck, powerful sneezes. Oh, yeah, and a very sore arm where I got the shot.
I finally gave in and medicated (decongestant and aspirin) myself and started steaming my face in addition to all the fluids I've been forcing through myself for a while now, but I was curious about the sudden increase in strength of symptoms right on the heels of that flu shot. I know it didn't give me the flu, because my symptoms are not flu symptoms. (I'm still showing no fever, too.) Is one of its effects that it kick my immune system in the butt and get it to work harder, thus resulting in my feeling worse? Or have I fallen into the land of the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy?
I'm just curious.
Thanks!
Priscilla
Jim - 22 Oct 2006 17:22 GMT Sorry but the same thing happened to my wife, she was also told that it was no problem and we both got the shots. On the same day I got bad nausea which took about 24 hours to get over but my wife now has a bad cold with all the symptoms that you are having - we are both on our 70's, all I can say: now what else????

You may have been very flu-suseptible, judging from your sore arm adn have a reastion on to of the cold symptoms.
Just my guess here.

Yeah, I talked to my brother-in-law (who's a scientist) today, and he confirmed that the flu shot will rev up the immune system for a while and it will go postal over any invader. They warn about not getting the shot if one has a fever, but don't say anything about all the other symptoms of an immune system fighting off invasion! Idjits.
I'm feeling a little better today than yesterday, so maybe my immune system is starting to be convinced that stomping on the rhinovirus, stabbing it, setting it on fire, and putting it through a shredder might have taken care of it. Maybe. Really, I don't need several gallons more phegm!

I went through a period years ago when the flu shot would make me sick. My doctor then had me get a half-dose in the fall and another half-dose in the spring. That seemed to solve the problem. Oddly, we went back to one regular dose in the fall several years later, and I have never had a reaction since that time. Incidentally, I suffered from a continuous round of flu or flu-like illnesses every year until I started to get flu shots, but I have not had the problem since getting flu vaccine. Even the years when the flu shot made me sick (fever, aches) were much better than what I had in previous years.

Your body fights off thousands of germs every day. Your colon is full of germs, and there are germs all over your skin. Plus your mouth is really dirty. The food you eat is also food for the germs in your mouth.
The injected flu vaccine is made of dead viruses. So while the body mounts a response, there can't be an infection.
So I doubt that the flu vaccine caused you to get sicker. I think it is more likely that either all the activity of getting back to work caused you to get sicker or you got another cold (back to back colds).

Here is one item from the list: "People who are moderately or severely ill should usually wait until they recover before getting flu vaccine. If you are ill, talk to your doctor or nurse about whether to reschedule the vaccinatio. People with a *mild illness* [their emphasis] can usually get the vaccine." I'm steaming my face to get my sinuses clear, but I don't think I have a bacterial infection since I have no fever. For a few years there I was having colds turn into infected sinuses with some regularity. It hasn't happened for a while, though.

As well as the possibility of the shot hitting your immune system there's also the possibility that you picked up a different virus while at the doctor's. They give them away in the waiting room you know.

She gave me a prescription for amoxicillin, which I've started. I know it'll take a couple of days to kick in, which is a bummer, because I do feel LOUSY! When the tech had taken my BP, temp, etc., she asked me if I was experiencing any pain. "Everything above my collarbone hurts," I replied. "I think even my hair hurts!"

[quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > I hate the misery of a cold. Get well soon. Thanks, but it's not a cold at this point. It's a raging sinus infection, which is sort of like a cold on steroids. Think Incredible Hulk. Think having one's head full of seawater and practically hearing sloshing when one moves around. Think a stiff sore neck, constant pain in the face, and hacking cough that doesn't want to let you sleep.
This morning I got up (off the sofa where it's easier to sleep in a non-totally-horizontal position) after a whole 6 hours uninterrupted sleep (woo-hoo! except I usually function on 8-9). Yesterday evening the infection had advanced into my left tear duct, leaving me with a sore pink watery eye with swelling around the eye itself and gunk obscuring my vision. Right now I feel just a teensy bit better except for the fact that, despite the fact that I'm coughing less, it hurts more because I seem to have pulled some muscles coughing over the past few days. So, now instead of going "hack hack hack *groan*" I go "hack hack *ouch*!"
I'm starting to think I'll be lucky to get in to work at *all* this week. I have Friday off to participate in my diocese's annual convention. I'm a non-voting delegate, so I can be a little out of it, but I'm going to need to feel a whole lot better by then. Oh, plus I'm behind in some assignments at work.
Poor ickle me. ;-)
Priscilla, actually grateful for good medical care

If you feel you must - then think of those others who may not appreciate your presence as a modern Typhoid Mary.
Stay home, get well, and remember the bucket of water theory of indispensability.
And remember that there are people half a world away who care.

Getting in to work presupposes I'm feeling a LOT better. I doubt very much I'm contagious, though. The cold that started this could have been passed on, but the sinus infection? Unlikely. That's an idiosyncratic response to the effects of a cold.

Alan S - 25 Oct 2006 00:35 GMT >> Stay home, get well, and remember the bucket of water theory >> of indispensability. > >When my brain wakes up I'll know what you're talking about. It was explained to me when I was in the RAAF, in the middle of a complex engineering project (civil and military Air Traffic Control radio communications for Townsville)- and "the powers that be" posted me to a totally different job a thousand km away.
My boss said "if you think you're indispensable, put your hand in a bucket of water. Leave it there as long as you like. Then take it out and see how long it takes for the ripples to die away and all trace of your previous presence to disappear".
Harsh, maybe. But after I left, the project was still completed and everything worked properly - and no planes crashed. Of course, I like to think it would have happened better if I had been there, but that's just ego. Maybe my departure was the reason it succeeded:-)

Oh, that felt nice! :-) I actually made chicken soup on Saturday. Pretty dull chicken soup, because I ran out of energy when it came time to chop vegies to put in the stock. I also need to know what ingredient I need to put in so it's Episcopalian penicillin. Maybe if I serve it with a silver spoon? ;-)
> I *HATE* sinus infections, they can really lay you low. Here's hoping > that you are feeling much better today. I've definitely turned the corner. No more sore throat, and the neck glands and sinuses hurt only occasionally. My hair doesn't hurt at all anymore! Unfortunately I've got a new pain -- at some point when I was coughing out of control I must have pulled a muscle because now when I cough (much more occasionally than before) it hurts like heck all through my back. At first I thought I might have separated a couple of ribs.
When the improvements started I thought, "Oh, goodie! This will be over soon!" Ha! As if. I may need to write off the rest of the week.

I like to bundle up with fresh air coming in. The cats like it, too. They're started to come around again. For a few days there they were pretty standoffish. I think I scared them with the hacking honking sounds I was making, plus I think they could smell the infection. (Don't laugh!) Francis, my baby, who greets me by sniffing my mouth spent a lot of time sniffing around my nose, gathering data. Then no cuddles from him. :-( But today he was making nicey-nice again.

I felt so elated once the antibiotics started kicking in and I stopped getting worse. The trouble is, I'm getting better very slowly. I'm still sick. I have about enough energy to heat up a mug of soup, then it's time for a nap again. And, while I'm not constantly hacking, that's still an issue, as is the contents of my sinuses (sini?). In a moment of madness I'd thought I'd get back to work tomorrow. Now I'm thinking this whole week may be a write off. But I don't have enough mental energy to think about that much. I think I'll go take another nap.
