I recently received this phishing attack (I hope that's all it was). I
also hope they weren't harvesting newsgroup addresses.

Not seen this particular variant yet but I get a gazillion spams and
phishing emails to addresses I have published on usenet which is why I
no longer use live addresses.
I've recently started getting spams to an address which has ONLY ever
been published in RIPE as a contact for one of my domains.
Someone pointed out that labour in third world countries is now cheap
enough that they can use human bots to do this in addition to the
computer type. :(

That's nothing, I get bounces for spams I never sent from addresses
I've never used. :(
