I have had dry eyes for many years and restasis nor any of the other
eye drops helped much.  I sit and watch TV with my eyes closed sometimes.
I eat a lot of spicy food.  I use Texas Pete like some kids use Ketchup and
sometimes
my eyes start getting irritated right away.  So I googled it:  Dry eyes and
spicy foods.
All the answers said to give up spicy food and alcohol............well
that's pushing it
too far.  Of course wine isn't alcohol.  I guess everyone else already knew
this ?

You are too funny for words!!!

Come to a couple of AA meetings with me and see how many members will
agree with your statement that wine isn't alcohol. Or you can just
read the label on the bottle.

I gave up all alcohol many years ago, one day at a time.
However, don't even think of asking me to give up hot sauce!!

The following information is given with the utmost respect for the armed forces and civilians who have died in the current war in Iraq. According to http://icasualties.org/oif/
The number of Americans killed in Iraq as of July 27, 2006 is 2,571. Americans wounded = more than 18,777 United Kingdom = 114 Other = 115
Over 100 Iraqi civilians are killed every day. Most of them by the so-called insurgents.
Today, July 28, 2006 it has been 1184 days since Bush declared,"Mission Accomplished in Iraq." Why do some people still believe what he says?

I suffered from dry eyes for many years.  I do eat spicy foods, but not all
the time. Never notice a connection.  I think for me allergies are the
biggest factor.  I was working in a store at the time and the air in there
was very bad.  We had pigeons and rats living in there, up in the ceiling.
Stuff from them along with dust and who knows what all else was getting
recirculated all the time!  I tried every kind of eye drop and nothing
helped.

I quit that job and my eyes got better.  But then I had to battle the pine
pollen on Cape Cod.  When that was high, my eyes were dry and itchy.

Since then I haven't noticed dry eyes very often.  Yes, I'd get the sticky,
itchy allergy eyes.  But not the horrid dry eyes like I used to have.

This past week I've been suffering from dry eyes.  We're in the midst of a
heat wave.  I'm sure that isn't helping.  The air seems dry and I'm sure
there is a lot of pollen and stuff blowing around.

Have you tried Flax seed oil? It is the only thing that works for me
when I get dry eyes (which is too often).  I just heard a eye doctor on
a Public Radio health show explain that it was the only thing that
worked for him, too. The Omega 3 oil is what helps.

Just giving up the spicy foods seems to have done it.  When I use black
pepper I can't even taste it.  I will get over the hot stuff just like I
gave up
salt.  I used to think a tomato HAD to have salt on it.  Now I take 4 high
blood pressure medications daily. I haven't given up coffee yet.  I was just
kidding about
the alcohol but I do drink a glass of red wine most days.

I have suffered from dry eyes for years. In the winter with the heater on
the air is dry, in the summer with the a/c on the air is dry. I run a sonic
humidifier almost all the time. I use a combination of drops, Refresh tears
at night or if I wake up with dry eyes; Refresh Plus throughout the day,
about once an hour as needed; Natures Tears spray when driving.

I do use a lot of black pepper and eat Mexican often. I will try cutting out
the hot spicy things and see if that helps. I also have a glass or 2 of red
wine every day and occasionally have a few martinis.

It is funny you brought this up Charlie,  I am blaming the burning and
tearing of my eyes to allergies brought on by the excessive heat and
humid weather.  Now  I am thinking perhaps it is dry eye.

Thanks,  I am going to the eye doctor

If your eye doctor has a cure for dry eye, please let us know. I have been
to several different dye doctors, the only help is use artificial tears as
often. The medication they prescribed did nothing. Plugs in the tear ducts
was no help. Wearing moisture chamber goggles also works but is
uncomfortable.

They won't be much help for dry eye, if my experience is anything to go
by. They just told me it is something that happens to ladies my age and
use the artificial tears. When I tell them none of the tears works for
me, they shrug.

A teaspoon of flax oil for a few days really helps me. More than that,
though and I start feeling all progesterone-y and weepy.

I have map-dot-fingerprint (corneal dystrophy - flaking of the outer
surface of the cornea) and it is more painful right now (100 degree
heat, AC, ceiling fans) so I'll try the flax seed oil and let you all
know if it helps that.   Nothing else does much except temporary relief
from eye drops.

When I went to a new Optometrist a few years back that's when he told me to
use drop during the day and lubricant at night. He said my corneas were very
scratched and the dry eye is what was causing it.  I don't like the
lubricant because it makes my eye sight blurry but it makes my eyes feel
better.

I've tried the lubricants, both Refresh PM and Genteal Gel. They do work but
are very unpleasant. It feels like I have glue in my eyes, my lids stick
together and vision is very blurred. I usual wake up every 2-4 hours and I
use the Refresh tears several times a night.

I tried that lubricant.  Tried every brand there was.  Hated them all.  They
didn't make my eyes feel better.  Just sticky.  And as you say, they blur
the vision.

Things that cause dry eyes.

Six hour porno tapes, motorcycles rides through Arizona during July, a
Kansas winter, sky diving above 30,000 feet, a space walk in a speedo,
accidentally using an extra absorbant tampon to dry your eyes, and using a
blow dryer to light your grass.

I have dry eye and don't drink alcohol or eat spicy foods. Computers can
cause dry eye...we forget to blink when we are sitting in front of it. I
have drops next to my computer and use eye lubrication at night:)

For me, dry, itchy eyes are one of the signs of high blood glucose.
What do your BG tests show when your eye irritation is the worst?
