Have you been prescribed Amaryl, and did you experience a significant
weight loss that you attribute to that drug?
I'm M, T2, 65, and on glucophage for 6 years. But my fasting bg has been
steadily rising, and my A1c has gone from 6.x to 8 despite a lot of
effort to manage it. Weight is also rising, and I'm now about 20 pounds
heavier than I want to be.
My physician suggests Amaryl, and though I've done some reading I'd
welcome patient input.
Thanks!

Hi, I am on one half a mg of amaryl. Amaryl can increase appetite I
believe and causes weight gain. I have a friend who is on about two mgs
twice a day and she has gained weight. This drug can also cause lows .
Have you thougt about going on metformin or are you on it already. If
you take a low dose of amary, you should be fine. I wake up a few times
a night, so I take mine about five am and I dont have high numbers in
the morning.

I have been taking 2mg of Amaryl in the mornings before breakfast for one
year. It did not cause any weight gain but you definitely have to eat or it
can cause a low. I was also on Metformin (glucophage). Two months ago my
doctor changed the Metformin to ActosPlusMet when my A1c went over 7 and
that has caused some weight gain due to the Actos and possible fluid
retention. My A1c's previously stayed around 6.5. I'm still on the Amaryl as
well.

IKE: You are relaxing abit too much if your weight has gone up 20lbs in
6 yrs. Whatever your weight was 6 yrs ago.. it should be the same now.
That may be your basic problem.

Thanks for the input!
Better combine drugs with other things to get better control, or think
about byetta.

Howdy;
My experience with glimpride has been a bit mixed. My weight has gone up
with my normal eating habits - but has maintained with an 1,800 calorie/day
diet. Since I weigh about 275 I should be loosing an average of 2 lbs a
week - but I am not.
Amaryl is a drug that is two faced. Will it lower your blood sugar? - most
definately!! Will you lose weight - not ulesss you drastically exersize.
Ah....for the days when life was less complicated.

Hi Ike,
I've been taking 2mg of Amaryl every morning for 6 months and
was able to lose 25 lbs during that time. I don't think it
did anything either way regarding my weight. I never
experienced any lows and I do skip lunch occasionally, but
never breakfast, even if it's just a banana and some tomato
juice (I learned my lesson on potassium loss from
furosemide).
Cheers, Wizzzer

Amaryl tends to cause weight gain. But for me the opposite is true. I
wouldn't say that the drug itself is causing weight loss for me, but I am
taking it and losing on it. I do watch every bite I eat though.
Are you on any meds now? What sort of diet are you on? How's your thyroid?

I am on a small dose of Amaryl, 1 mg before bed, to help with my morning
bgs. It works for me, but seems to have no particular effect on my
weight.
