G'day guys ...
I'm wondering about cholesterol levels and T2 diabetics. When first
diagnosed my fasting CHOL was 8.2.
However, it's now 6.1, having been on 40 mils of Lipitor per days, for
quite a few months.(also on 1500 mg Metformin, 10 mg Tritace daily) and
I realise it should be lower than that.
What is the optimum level for T2 people - indeed is ther any difference
in what we should expect in contrast to non-diabetics ? Does Metformin
and its possible effect on the liver (in some) have any implications
for LDL/HDL ?
Just wondering before my next blood work. Thanks for your help

Research indicates that there is no optimum cholesterol number, but that
there are other factors that can be reliably predictive of
cardiovascular disease. Chief among these are triglycerides, HDL and
their ratios. In addition, lower HbA1c, the closer to 5% the better, is
associated with much lower CVD risk.
LDL has been found an inferior predictor of CVD.

Further to Susan's comment, could you post your breakdown:
Total: 6.1 mmol/L
LDL:
HDL:
Trigs:
VLDL: (if you have it).
The preferred Trigs/HDL ratio for mmol/L numbers is less
than 1.3.
What was your doctor's opinion?
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.
d&e, metformin 2x500mg

My lab has a notation on results that says diabetics should
be less than 4.0 for total cholesterol.
What are you doing in other ways (other than meds) to try
and improve levels?

As well as the 40 mg Liitor, I eat a low fat diet and cycle daily
(about 8 Km)

How about eating low sat and trans fats but trying moderate
other fats? I use a cholesterol lowering margarine, it
worked well enough on it's own for me but I do also eat very
limited sat and trans fats. I eat good fats in the form of
walnuts, olive oil, olives, avocado... Other people here
have solutions as well, that work for them. If you are
eating low fat, perhaps you are by default eating higher
carb. That can have an effect particularly on triglyceride
levels.
