Autonomic & peripheral neuropathy; rheumatoid arthritis eye problems

Billie - 08 Apr 2006 03:40 GMT I was born with a urinary tract abnormality that caused me many problems until it was surgically corrected when I was 35. Because of all the *nasty* tests I endured prior to that surgery, whenever I started having problems with bladder incontinence a few years ago (say like ten+ approximately) I had no desire to go to the urologist about the problem, instead taking care of it myself with the aids made available to us for the problem.
When I was 22 they found that I also had an atonic bladder, rarely emptying. An insufficient nerve supply was also discovered at the same time. Following the corrective surgery, I considered things going rather smoothly simply because of having no more nephritis and reflux.
*Today, I am almost totally incontinent. I asked my endo if this was due to autonomic neuropathy or not, and he told me to have my urologist make the determination. Saw my urologist Tuesday for my lithotripsy follow-up, and he scheduled me for a test that would show him exactly what my bladder was doing and why. Had that test done yesterday. UGH!!!! NOW I know why I've put off seeing the uro for so long prior to discovery of the kidney stones.
Anyway, he said my bladder problems were definitely diabetes related, but he will give me a more detailed report after he has had time to thoroughly study the results. Just thought I'd share the good news..... :-)
*My endo also tested my peripheral neuropathy a couple of weeks ago. He has a neurologist who comes into the clinic to do the testing and any other neurology stuff. My endo was wanting to know the full extent of my neuropathy, and just how much we can realistically do to try to help it. Doing the nerve conduction, it was determined that I have moderate to severe in my feet, legs, hands, and arms (with increasing muscle weakness). The doctor was able to answer my questions that I had along the way, and much, very much of my chronic pain is neuropathy related. He also added some tests of the muscles in my legs; I could not even feel him insert the needles (neuropathy *does* have some things in its favor :-).
*I have been having considerable eye problems for the past year, especially the past six months. My ophthalmologist has checked me very thoroughly for diabetes related problems, but has reassured me that as of right now, I still show no diabetes related problems. She said that my problems are related to my rheumatoid arthritis (onslaught in 64). The problem lies with my cornea, requiring multiple different drops a day. Next week I am to go have an OCT done. This is to check on my glaucoma. My pressure had been running in the 20's prior to my cataract surgery, but dropped to about 16-18 following the removal.
Guess that is a bit of what's been going on lately with me, along with four kidney stones which ***appear*** to be gone, but will not know for sure until two months from now. Almost all mid back pain, bilaterally, has just about disappeared since the last lithotripsy, and that was one of the chronic pain areas that has had no cause before now; have been having it for more than five years without any explanation. Glad to get rid of that much anyway. :-) Things really can get better even though it doesn't seem like it sometimes.

Craig - 08 Apr 2006 09:18 GMT Hi Billie, That's (potentially) great news on the kidney stones - relief from back pain from any cause is always a plus.
I sympathize with the nerve conduction study. I had one a few years back unrelated to diabetes and looked and the length of the needles and thought, "You're going to put that where??!!:-)" - the needle looked like it was able to pass through my leg at least twice!
Good luck with the eye testing. Here's hoping that things continue to keep on getting better for you. It sounds like you've managed to keep your spirits up through some trying times.
Best wishes, Craig Type 2 NSW, Australia

A little here, a little there. *s* While not completely gone, at least maybe they can get things more manageable. I've got to take a supplement for *stone prevention* at its best. ;-)
I still have the lower back pain from an old L5-S1 herniated disc (nerve entrapment), plus a new bulging disc S? (I cannot remember, and don't know where my mri report is). I will be seeing the spine doctor next week, follow-up from the Kyphoplasty surgery last fall. Also coming up is an appointment with the pain doctor for a left sciatica block. That *should* get the back feeling better.
If there can be anything positive about neuropathy, I guess it is when it has reached the point that you cannot feel the pain of the zap (nerve conduction) nor the needle sticks of the emg.
It is my understanding that the OCT will only take a few minutes.
Also have an appointment with my rheumatologist next week. Fun, fun, fun. *s*

Sorry to hear about the trouble down at the waterworks... I do not have that problem, as yet, but I do know about the neuropathy in that right foot. And, I also know about the eye problems. Although my retina problem is not the usual diabetes retinopathy, it may have been caused by the diabetes, nonetheless. The latest is that it was part of that inflammatory problem that I have had for the last few years and which led to my diagnosis.
Good news about the disappearance of the back pain... With a little more luck, you ought to have a glorious Spring!
Wishing you well, as always,
Will, T2

But my neighbours probably think I do :) Every six months I get 9 large cartons delivered, labelled "INCONTINENCE PRODUCTS" :) They are Jazzy's nappies (diapers).

Better to have them delivered than to be standing in the supermarket queue while the checkout person puts a price check over the PA:-)
I actually had that happen once for a packet of condoms back in the early '60s. Before the days of aids, safe sex ads on TV, and public acceptance in our then incredibly staid society of the things that weren't "properly" discussed in public. I think I could have slunk out of that supermarket under the door, my face would have made Rudolph's red nose pale by comparison:-)

Price check register 7! 12 pack of extra small ... ;)

Billie - 09 Apr 2006 01:50 GMT Will, you can understand why they are checking you out for RA, inflammatory process big-time. All these years that I have had RA (since '64 with birth of my firstborn), and this is the first that I knew about the associated eye problems. Connie didn't even hesitate when I asked her what was behind my problems. Too, my intraocular pressure dropped after the cataract surgery.
Well, I came into this world with waterworks problems, so it's nothing new, nor is it anything serious, mainly just a bother. Guess it helps with me being homebound.
You know what would usher in Spring in a big way for me........... the completion of getting my motorized vehicle!! The company is faxing the forms to my doctor for him to complete. The guy that Jim talked to seemed to think that I was more than qualified, even under Medicare. That is what my endo said, too, that if anyone needed one, it surely is me. He made me feel so special when he said he normally does not do things like that, but for *me* he would. I'm anxious to get this show on the road!! Literally. *s*
Did I ever tell you that my daughter works for an attorney here? And the guy she works for went to college with a bunch from my graduating class, and all know one another. We discovered all this out last year when we were getting ready for our class reunion. Also, the attorney who represents the hospital (Jim was Risk Management director among other things) also went to school with them. Forty-five years later, and we draw this biiiiiiiiig picture! LOL
Take care, Billie
