Hello all:
After reading about so many people having made great strides
in their diabetes, I thought it might be useful to know what they used
to do this. I ask only that (like me) someone reading the results may
be inspired to take control of their disease!
1) When was your diabetes diagnosed ? What was your A1C or fasting bg
or pp bg
at the time of diagnosis ?
2) What are your bg numbers at the present ?
3) What was your weight at the time of diagnosis ?
4) How much have you lost or gained ?
5) Have you had complications from diabetes in these intervening years
?
6) Do you take insulin ? When did you start (how many years) ?
7) What is your typical diet ?
8) What is your typical exercise ?
Thanks!

Michelle, ever tried Dreamfield's pasta? It tastes great, and for SOME
diabetics it causes very little bg rise. It causes mine to go up more
than the nutrition info, but still less than regular pasta.
Dave
Michelle - 02 Apr 2006 19:47 GMT
I've never tried Dreamfield's. I live in a small town, so I'm dubious
about my ability to locate it here--but keeping it in mind in case I
come across it somewhere. :-) Actually, I don't really miss the
pasta, etc. I think I have an psychological association with eating
them and feeling bad. Still, sometimes when I'm around other people
who are fixing food and then worry about what I can or cannot eat, it
would be nice to have some starch alternatives to suggest, since so
many traditional meals are built around the starch.
Thanks, Dave!

Don't remember since I knew little about diabetes then. It was around
500 I think. I also had all the other classic symptoms.

As of ten minutes ago 102

I'm a Type 1 so I have taken insulin since first diagnosis. Humalog
and Lantus.

Adapted from the various "pyramids". Whole grain based, lots of
veggies, fish, some dairy and no processed foods.

week targeting different parts of the body.

> 1) When was your diabetes diagnosed ? What was your A1C or fasting bg
> or pp bg
> at the time of diagnosis ?
April 27, 1987. I have no idea what my numbers were at the time. I know in
the ER they did a finger poke and it was too high for the meter to read.
The numbers wouldn't have meant anything to me anyway and I never thought to
ask.
> 2) What are your bg numbers at the present ?
Right now all over the place. Experiencing too many lows.
> 3) What was your weight at the time of diagnosis ?
Maybe in the 180's but again, too long ago to remember.
> 4) How much have you lost or gained ?
Between then & now I've lost, gained and lost again. Currently 159, but my
highest was 268.
> 5) Have you had complications from diabetes in these intervening years
No. Well, maybe. The endo said the severe legs pains I'd get when I walked
was intermittent claudication and I've read that's common in diabetics. I
can now walk pain free as long as I don't try to go too fast so I don't
consider it a real complication.
> 6) Do you take insulin ? When did you start (how many years) ?
Yes. Started on April 27, 1987 - day of my diagnosis. Got it through an IV
for the first few days and then the nurse brought in the dreaded syringe.
> 7) What is your typical diet ?
Low fat, carbs under 200g/day, lean meats
> 8) What is your typical exercise ?
Walking. Go for a walk every day after lunch for a minimum of a half hour,
usually longer. Go for longer walks on the weekend. Sometimes do 15-20
minutes of an aerobic exercise DVD or video game.

Lost 16lbs.

Intermittent neuropathy in hands has gone. Permanent neuropathy in
left foot has gone. Permenent neuropathy in right foot much reduced. Angina gone.
> 6) Do you take insulin ? When did you start (how many years) ?
No.
> 7) What is your typical diet ?
Breakfast is meat fish or eggs, possibly plus a little cabbage or beans.
Lunch is optional and light. Often cheese and a small oatcake or apple, or a bowl of
soup with no strach veg in it.
Dinner is a large meal of meat plus low glycemic index veg, sometimes
followed two hours later (to give BG a chance to go down) by some ice
cream with a few berries.
I usually have two or three low-sugar mochas a day, plus a late
afternoon snack of oatcake and cheese, an apple, or some soup.
> 8) What is your typical exercise ?
Walking and cycling to get around, gardening, DIY, climbing. I have a
tree in my garden I'm adapting into a climbing and rope work gym. I
hope to lower my blood pressure by increasing amounts of walking and
cycling up hills as the weather improves.

? Obviously, you lost the weight BEFORE your diagnosis, otherwise, you
must be very strange looking:-) What does someone -13 lbs look like, if
you can see him at all.
