I've been diabetic for 5 years and for the first 4 1/2 years I worried about
anything and everything regarding my diabetes.
I have always been kind of anal and a worst case scenario type of person.
I always read the cutting edge news concerning diabetes. BTW, I'm type II
and when first dx'd my glucose was running on average 180 to 240.
I see my doctor every 90 days and do my best to follow his directions.
I have added a few supplements along the way via research. I take ALA,
purified North Atlantic fish oil supplements and recently cinnamon bark
supplements have been added.
My last Dr. visit showed a fasting 112 BG, a 6.6 HGBA1C. My cholesterol was
down to 195, HDL 54, Creatinine was down to 1.3, triglycerides were still
way too elevated at 270!
In December "05" my numbers were- fasting glucose 242, cholesterol 248, HDL
35, HGBA1C 8.7, triglycerides 298.
These last numbers have been fairly typical over the duration since my
original diagnosis, with the exception of 2 or 3 readings much worse!
Fasting sugar as high as 425, HOGBACK 9.0, cholesterol 305, HDL 30,
Triglycerides 320 and signs of poor kidney function- Bun 1.8, Creatinine
2.3, RBC 3.0, protein in my urine, etc, all bad.
I literally relegated myself to kidney failure and pretty much started to
simply write myself off as a goner with only a couple of years left to live
(which still may be the case?)
But with the last half encouraging readings I'm feeling much better, not
only physically but also psychologically.
I didn't change anything since December when I added the Cinnamon bark
extract which I know had very little to do with my better readings.
I guess if I had one thing to attribute to my better readings it would have
to be giving up!
I just stopped worrying about it. Through all the years all I did was worry
and research diabetes.
In December after getting my blood test results I just relegated myself to
doom and started living my life again. I stopped researching diabetes every
hour of the day. I started living my life as I did before I was diagnosed
with diabetes. I still followed most of my doctor's orders but other than
following my doc's protocol and continue to take my supplements I did
nothing more except stop worrying about my diabetes 24/7.
I'm going to continue to not and let diabetes dictate my life and continue
to follow Dr. instructions but that's all.
I'll see what my next test results are and go from there. But I've (for now)
stopped worrying myself to death over my diabetes.
Good luck to all who are inflicted with this epidemic.
I am going to cross post this to a few other newsgroups only because my
fingers are tired.

If what you are saying is that you are consistently showing
improvement and are keeping those BGs down and A1cs below the 7s then
you are on your way to good control, hence no reason to worry. However
5 years is hardly enough time to say their is no reason to worry since
many diabetic complications take longer than that to show up.
Stay cautious and keep improving your control. But do not let worry
ruin your life.

Sorry, but I don't think you're in no worries territory yet! A lower carb
diet might to good things to those trigs and your A1c.

Hi george
All I can say is that I'm pleased to see that you found
something that works for you now.
But I do have to wonder what was the "cutting edge news
concerning diabetes" and what advice you followed from
seeing your "doctor every 90 days" and doing your best "to
follow his directions". Particularly when all that work and
study resulted in "December "05" my numbers were- fasting
glucose 242, cholesterol 248, HDL >35, HGBA1C 8.7,
triglycerides 298."
As I said, I'm glad you found something that works for you
now. If you want to tweak it a little, try this for a
little light reading:

And you're right - worry never solves anything. However,
there is a middle ground between worry and apathy that may
be worth investigating.
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

A few things for you to think about. Make of them what you will.
1. You have been working at this for 5 years but your Insulin Resistance is
still quite high
Our target: triglycerides/HDL ratio much less than 3. Yours = 5.0 !
Have you considered some of the anti-Insulin Resistance meds like metformin,
Actos and Avandia?
2. Fish oil attacks high triglycerides. The cardiologist who advises one
of my Diabetes Support Groups recommends:
3 gram/day for folks at risk for premature heart attack
6 gram/day for folks with symptoms suggesting premature heart attack
9 gram/day for folks with known high probability of heart attack.
I hope you are taking enough fish oil.
Also, time-release Niacin (1000 mg/day, over the counter vitamin) also
fights high triglycerides.
3. After almost 5 years,:
". . .In December '05 my numbers were- fasting glucose 242, . . . HBA1C 8.7,
. . ."
An HbA1c of 8. 7 correlates with a 24 hour,a day 7 day a week average bG of
230.
If everything goes to pot, you know that insulin injections will always
work.
I was in control within 2 days of starting insulin. Of course, Type 2
diabetics should be addressing any high Insulin Resistance via diet,
control, weight loss, daily exercise, metformin, and (Actos or Avandia)
before considering regular term insulin.
Regards
Old Al
