How are these for figures?
November 3, 2005 - diagnosis.
FBG 10.2 mmol/L
Cholesterol 4.0 mmol/L
Triglicerides 1.68 mmol/L
LDL/HDL 2.6
Chol/HDL 4.4
HbA1C 8.2
March 16, 2006
FBG 5.1 mmol/L (I took a reading with my meter at the time of the test
- 5.3, so near enough to good enough. I got the very strong impression
that I was the first person ever to pull out a BG meter after a blood
sample was taken at this quite large medical practice.)
Cholesterol 4.0 mmol/L
Triglicerides 1.13 mmol/L
LDL/HDL 4.0
Chol/HDL 5.7 (LDL went up and HDL went down - so much for all those
fish oil and flaxseed oil capsules I have been swallowing).
So the cholesterol ratio story is not real good, although total
cholesterol is still in the right range, but wait until you hear the
real news.
Drum roll please.

Utterly Marvelous!!!!!
It takes a while for the cholesterol to straighten itself out. If you
are losing weight that is even more likely. So don't obsess about the
cholesterol until you've maintained the healthy blood sugar level for
long enough that it can have an impact on your lipids.

I forgot to mention that I have lost 10Kg (22 pounds) since November.
With total cholesterol at 4 mmol/L nobody is too worried about the
ratio, although the change is a bit mysterious. I've been cutting down
on fats (my dog thinks that diabetes is an excellent idea because he
gets to eat all the skin off the chicken) and taking the omega-3
supplements, but I am prepared to be patient.

Congrats Peter, that is great. Just remember the key word in your
subject is ALMOST, not cured.

I know all about "cured" when it comes to diabetes. I was sued by a
quack who claims that people can throw away their insulin three weeks
after they start her treatment (she regrows Islets of Langerhans!!!),
and the weekend after I got the diagnosis I was on the radio talking
about quack cures.

Pete,
The progress from 8.2 (dx 09/05) to 5.6 (03/06) for HbA1c number is
worth bragging! Pat on your back there.
You have indicated a few Cholesterol numbers but I am not able to
relate to them for some reason. To be specific can you share the
following:
Total Cholesterol
LDL
Age
Weight/Hight
Weight loss (if any)
hs-CRP
Share only those numbers you feel comfortable sharing with!
Also what about medication?
I am assuming you are T2DM.
And finaly share with us what seems to be working for you!
Congratulation Peter!

Metformin 500mg, twice a day.
>I am assuming you are T2DM.
Yep.
>And finaly share with us what seems to be working for you!
Eating about half as much as I did before, having breakfast and
spreading food across the day, lots more exercise (home office,
computer work, too easy to only move 10 metres in a day's commuting),
metformin, carb counting, not eating my favourite foods (donuts and
pizza), aspartame instead of sugar in the 6+ cups of coffee or tea
each day, telling everyone that I have diabetes and that I am going in
the City to Surf run in August (http://city2surf.sunherald.com.au/),

control of your destiny. Not come the rest of the journey! i.e. staying
the course!
Keep it up!

Both the FBG and HbA1c are FANTASTIC!!!
In just four months you chopped your A1c by 2.6!
And cut the FBG in HALF!
And don't forget, the A1c is a lagging indicator: it's true it's
weighted to more recent weeks, but it's a cumulative number that is
basically an average of the last few months. In other words, it's
probably slightly elevated if you had higher BG's a few months ago.
CONGRATULATIONS! That's an awesome accomplishment, especially getting
into the 5% club so soon after DX! WAY TO GO!
