I have been an insulin dependent diabetic for over 40 years. The only
diabetic complication that I have suffered from in the past is coronary
artery disease, which is prevalent in my family history. Eleven years ago, I
had a double by-pass. Presently I take a few cardiac medications, including
Plavix (which I have taken for three years). I exercise regularly and watch
my diet. My a1c's are usually between 6.5 and 7.0.
Three months ago, my endocrinologist thought he saw some retinopathy in my
left eye. He made it clear to me that he could be wrong, and that I should
see my opthalmogist. My opthalmologist subsequently examined me thoroughly
and told me that I do not have retinopathy and that "considering you have
had diabetes for 40 plus years, your eyes are in great shape."
Both doctors are highly regarded.
The other day, I saw my endocrinologist for my scheduled three-month visit,
and again he told me that he sees signs of retinopathy.
I have no problem with my vision, but to be on the safe side, I will see my
opthalmologist next week.
Could the Plavix be causing bleeding or retinopathy?

I don't know about the plavix, but you may need to see a different
ophthalmologist. I had no problem with my vision for many years,
other than needing glasses, until the day my eyes hemorrhaged and the
blood blocked my field of vision. The damaged was ongoing for many
years. If I had been examined by competent doctors in the correct
specialty this would have been taken care of a lot sooner. Have your
endo describe exactly what he is seeing in writing and take that with
you to your ophthalmologist. Have you ever had the exam done where
they dilate your eyes, inject you with a dye and then take photos of
your retinas?
That will set the baseline for your visual health and it will show
things that even the ophthalmologist with his/her better equipment
might tend to miss.
