If I read you correctly that Byetta is a substitute for insulin, it is not (I made sure do
double check the Patient Information at byetta.com before stating that for a fact :o), nor is it
formulated for use with insulin, though some T2's have been able to stop using insulin (by
choice), using Byetta along with Metformin, with one or two that I know of who are on Byetta
only, but it is not meant to be used as a basal med.  Some insurances will not pay for Byetta if
one is taking insulin.

I've been on Byetta since Sept., but recently switched to Symlin.

I'm practicing for writing long sentences  :o),

In the last several months, three new treatments have appeared: Apidra
as a substitute for Humalog, Symlin as an adjunct, and Byetta as a
substitute. I was on Apidra for three months and found I used a lot
less, but at the end of three months my A1C was unchanged at 6.9,
where it's been for years. I'm now two months into using Symlin and
again am seeing dramatically lower insulin usage. In another month,
I'll get another A1C. Regardless of what that says, I'll probably try
Byetta for three months, then decide which to use on a regular basis.

I have a sample bottle of Symlin.  I have a lot of high and lows because of
gastroparesis.
My A1c has been 6.4 the last two times which is pretty useless information
since 1/3 of my readings are too
high 1/3 too low and 1/3 normal.  My endo doctor thinks a pump or Symlin
would eliminate
all these problems.
My side of the story is that age 66 I don't want to lug around a pump in the
hot weather of SC.
I do the same thing with a syringe.  last night I ate two small pieces of
pork for dinner at 5:00 PM
my bg at bedtime was 196 so I took 1 unit of insulin so it will be in the
100 range this AM as it
usually drops a little from taking Lantus. My insulin supplies are free at
present in my case.  A
pump, I suspect not.  Things like high blood pressure are affecting my
readings, I presently take
4 BP meds and it is the 140 range now, I don't smoke, not overweight and
drink one glass of red wine daily
so I'm starting to think I need to see a heart specialist or someone who
treats HBP.  This doctor is supposed
to be the best but I am thinking of switching to my family doctor as he is
willing to see me monthly
about the BP, this endo doctor sees me every 3 or 4 months and doesn't
answer my calls about
the BP.  These problems are causing my potassium to be elevated also.
