What's the point of posting the WHOIS here?
Ma¢k - 28 Mar 2006 05:15 GMT >[snip WHOIS info] > >What's the point of posting the WHOIS here? so that everyone interested in getting rid of spammers can email the complaint to the ISP and posting hosts. It's a group effort. don't participate and you have only yourself to blame for the continued posting of such worthless spam. A single complaint from as many posters as possible goes a long way in getting rid of such worthless netscum.

Judanne - 28 Mar 2006 09:03 GMT But for people like me (and maybe others) what you posted makes no sense as there is just too much info. Isn't the isp the "operamail.com" in the email address?

Isn't the isp the "operamail.com" in the email >address? > >Judanne sometimes the spammer includes info that is fake. Tracing the IP address provides more accurate info. There have been many times when someone posted and they ISP appeared to be something like operamail.com for example by the ip address tracked back to the real ISP which was something totally different.
Sometimes the spammers actually know how to hide or use a pay service that hides their info for them. However, even if the actual ISP can't be found, if we can track down the contact info for the posting host they will more often than not put a stop to the spamming if addressed correctly.

If people don't know how to read a header, how can you expect them to be able to pull the important information from the header you supply?
And if they don't know how to run a whois on an IP addy, how do you expect them to understand where to send a complaint?
IMHO, your 3-5 kB posts are worse than the spam, and you don't even use the 'x-no-archive: yes' option.
Better to provide information that the not-so-net-savvy can use, like:
Posted from IP: 70.160.124.140 (cox.net) abuse@cox.net Posted via Google: groups-abuse@google.com Add'l. complaints: uce@ftc.gov spam@ftc.gov
Or provide a clickable shortcut: mailto:abuse@cox.net,groups-abuse@google.com,uce@ftc.gov,spam@ftc.gov?subject=Spam

Mack is providing the information, in the hope that some of the more savvy individuals will benefit.
For the rest, I submit, it may be rather like riding in a limousine in which one's companions all speak another language.

because without the headers it boils down to he said this, you said that and no-one showed any proof of anything. And that requires the ISP or posting host to do all of the foot work in tracking down the original post and headers and NO ISP/posting host will do all the work for us based on that type of complaint. They simply do not have the resources with the volume of complaints they receive daily.
I'll try to remember the mail to link suggestion which will work best with the instructions to copy and paste the complete headers and post into the body of the email complaint. so they will still need to be provided.

Judanne - 29 Mar 2006 06:22 GMT "...and you don't even use the 'x-no-archive: yes' option."
I've seen that at the start of posts and have wondered what that was all about, too. I just assumed it was a personal idiosyncrasy of the person posting.

However most simply ignore it all together. Google seems to honor, but google is one archiving leech web site out of many.
and it doesn't work when people make replies to the thread.
However it does not have to be the first line of a post, some news readers can put it in the header.
