A couple of studies posted in here recently used a very small sampling
- 10 to 15 - group. So I am conducting a survey and hoping for at
least that many:
Are you Type 1 or Type 2?
What was your last A1c?
Are you more than 10 lbs. overweight for your height?
What is your HDL and LDL?
Do you eat a low carb to moderate carb diet (100 or less per day)? If
so, are you on Lipitor or any other kind of cholesterol lowering
medication?
Do you eat a higher carb diet (over 100 per day)? If so, are you on
Lipitor or any kind of cholesterol lowering medication?
What type(s) of diabetes medications do you use?
If you are using insulin, do you pump or use MDI?
What other (non diabetes) of medications are you on?
How often do you exercise per week?
On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate your overall health?
Are you seeing a diabetes specialist (i.e. and endo)? If so, how
often?
Is there anything else you'd like to add regarding diabetes and your
overall health?
Thanks,
Kurt

I had to google these, as I can't find them now. For some reason, the lab
couldn't compute the LDL when HDL is greater than 100. At least, that's
what I was told. The HDL before this last one as 87, IIRC.

Weight lifting, 3x. Cardio, it depends. Usually every other day, but on

I don't know how to do that. I'd say 8. I can't be a 10 if I'm a t2,

Low carb works best.

This is very inspiring, Ozgirl (as are some of the other posts).
I am too ashamed right now to contribute to this thread of super

Just curious - you mentioned a 3 hr/day exercise for 6 days. What do
you do for 3 hours ?
That's a lot!
Anyway- just wanted to say to you and everyone else how much I admire
them.

Every morning before thekids wake I take my golden retriever
for a jog/walk for 45 minutes. First half is a jog, then we
do the walk/run for the after half. Three times a week I do
aquarobics with a neighbour at the local indoor pool for
about 45 minutes. 2 afternoons a week I run with my 14 yr
old's footy team. They start their training with a run of
about 2 km's, then I sit and watch their training.
On the other afternoons we were delivering junk mail but my
son gave it up so I still walk, pushing my 10 yr old in a
stroller (she has Down syndrome and her muscles tire easily
as a result of poor muscle tone that is part and parcel of
Downs). I am gone for around 1 1/2 hours usually and walk at
a fast pace. I choose areas that have some hills as well as
flats.
I ride my 15 yr old son's bike at times through the day
while the kids are at school and I am currently doing some
weight training with my 14 yr old who is trying to build up
some muscle to help with football. In between I do housework
and shopping for myself and 4 kids, answer a few newsgroup
posts and sometimes read books :) My exercise involves fun
things as I would lose interest very quickly doing formal
exercise. Oh, and I dance a lot with my little one with
Downs, she loves anything musical.

Any survey done here would be meaningless because it's not a
randomly chosen group. The people here are ones who take more
initiative in managing their disease than the rest of the world.

Some who come here, or lurk, might not draw that conclusion on their
own. So, if that is an observation a newbie concludes based on
information posted by the participants in this thread then it wouldn't
be meaningless, would it?

The following information is given with the utmost respect
for the armed forces and civilians who have died in the
current war in Iraq. According to http://icasualties.org/oif/
The number of Americans killed in Iraq as of Mar. 21, 2006 is 2,319.
Americans wounded = more than 17,000
United Kingdom = 103
Other = 104
Iraqi deaths are probably in excess of 100,000.
Today, March 22, 2006
It has been 1056 days since Bush declared,
"Mission Accomplished in Iraq."
I'll finish with the story of the Native American talking to
his granddaughter about the two warring dogs in his soul.
One dog was filled with hate and fear, the other was full of
love and peace. His granddaughter asked, "Grandfather, which
dog wins?" He replied, "The one I feed."
Kurt - 23 Mar 2006 02:12 GMT

Fair question. Several reasons. Curiousity for one. Hoping to get a
snapshot of those who post here is another. Offering the sum and total
of it to others to make their own deductions as if it were any study
that was posted here. Encouragment to newbies that people here (and
it's proving my theory so far) are in control of their diabetes, rather
than it controlling them.
Not twisting anybody's arm to participate, Chuck. And no ulterior
motives if you were wondering that.

Uh... I wouldn't call 100 g or less per day moderate carb. What I eat in
terms of carbs varies from day to day. Could be anywhere from 80 g to 120
g, occasionally as much as 150 g (not often), not counting the 4 servings of
non-starchy veg I eat daily. If I eat more veg than that, I cut back on the
carby foods.
I do not take any cholesterol meds currently. When my thyroid was out of
whack, so was my cholesterol. Then I took Policosinol and Red Rice Yeast.
> Do you eat a higher carb diet (over 100 per day)? If so, are you on

See above.

Metformin and Amaryl.

Nope.

Lisinopril, Zyrtec, some kind of diuretic (can't remember the name offhand)
and assorted supplements.
> How often do you exercise per week?
Whenever I can. Really it varies because of my other health problems.
There are times I can't do any at all.

No clue. However my Drs. think I am doing well. All of my labs are in
range. A1c is still a bit high but coming down.

Endo. every 3 months.

Humalog. Lantus.

I'm very happy with my Endo, who specializes in diabetes and see him
about 3 times a year. Also once a year to a foot doctor and twice a
year to a retinologist.

Like most, I think I am in relatively better shape than when I didn't
have diabetes. Still get frustrated with the occasional weird days
where nothing seems to make sense.

Depends on your definition of exercise. Whenever we go out we always
park far enough from whatever business we are going to that requires
us to walk at least a block to get there and then when we come out the
darned car is over a block away.

The following information is given with the utmost respect
for the armed forces and civilians who have died in the
current war in Iraq. According to http://icasualties.org/oif/
The number of Americans killed in Iraq as of Mar. 21, 2006 is 2,319.
Americans wounded = more than 17,000
United Kingdom = 103
Other = 104
Iraqi deaths are probably in excess of 100,000.

I do not do low carb as a rule, but I do watch my carbs, being on insulin.
Sometimes I eat more carbs and shoot more insulin to cover. Most times I
try to keep the carbs down to what I know I can handle with a minimal amout
of insulin.
> Do you eat a higher carb diet (over 100 per day)? If so, are you on

no and no.

Lantus 30u before dinner, and Novolog, caculated by carbs and pre dinner
blood glucose reading.

MDI
> What other (non diabetes) of medications are you on?
None. Metformin made no difference in my control, although glucotrol helped
for a short time.
> How often do you exercise per week?
I usually just try to move more than the previous day. Getting prepared for
two root canals next week to try and save some teeth that are abcessing.
But the main reason is that I have osteo arthritus in the lumbar area of my
back, and have lost 1 1/2 " in my height due to that. Very painfull to be
on my feet for very long...10 minutes of walking in the grocery store is
enough to cause major pain, but it can be alleviated by resting my back for
a while after, thank God....
> On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate your overall health?
Some days, like recently, I would say 5. Getting my teeth taken care of , I
would say, 8.
(i.e. and endo)? If so, how
> often?
Sorry, must have hit the insert key. I have not seen an endo. I go to a
clinic, that charges me on a sliding fee scale. I get most of my
medications and insulin through patient assistance programs. I usually see
a CNP or PA. I could however, see an doctor if needed. I think that I
know better what I need, and the medical staff that I deal with think along
the same lines. I know they will let me know if and when they think I am on
the wrong road.

Since I'm not yet diabetic I don't know if you want my answer but I

You also might want to ask age on this too, and maybe number of years

insulin resistant.

Every one to three months.... every month right now
: Is there anything else you'd like to add regarding diabetes and your

Daily Prednisone sent my controlled diabetes into orbit, bringing on the first weight-gain in my
life (63 y/o) after I started using oral meds which could not bring it under control. Even with
insulin it is very hard to maintain the spikes until trying Byetta. Since starting on the pump
that has been changed to Symlin, and appears to be working.

Type 2
What was your last A1c?
5.3
Are you more than 10 lbs. overweight for your height?
Yes
What is your HDL and LDL?
I can't remember the details - the test is at least 2 years old. The
HDL was in mid-40s - LDL I don't remember. I expect improvements in my
next test, which will occur when my doc gets back from family medical
leave.
Do you eat a low carb to moderate carb diet (100 or less per day)? If
so, are you on Lipitor or any other kind of cholesterol lowering
medication?
I attempt to eat moderate carbs most of the time. I'm on no
cholestorol meds
Do you eat a higher carb diet (over 100 per day)? If so, are you on
Lipitor or any kind of cholesterol lowering medication?
I keep my carbs under 100 most days
What type(s) of diabetes medications do you use?
No diabetes meds
If you are using insulin, do you pump or use MDI?
What other (non diabetes) of medications are you on?
Lisinopril, Levothyroxine, Flonase
How often do you exercise per week?
Every day
On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate your overall health?
8
Are you seeing a diabetes specialist (i.e. and endo)? If so, how
often?
I don't see an endo; so far most of my treatment is by a GP. I see an
opthamologist 2 times a year, and am currently being treated by an ENT
doc for ear and balance problems resulting from head injury.
Is there anything else you'd like to add regarding diabetes and your
overall health?
The official diagnosis made me more conscious of my need for exercise.
It also made me eligible for prescription strips so I can test as I see
necessary. I'd be happier if I had been as knowledgable and had the
cheaper strips 10-12 years ago when I first discovered I was IGT. I
might have managed to stay there.

Your comment above really struck a nerve for me. I noticed in reading
the replies that my rating of my own health was a lot lower than other
people's.
But when I thought about it further, I realized that the conditions that
cause me to describe my health as mediocre are not related to diabetes.
A very bad back, chronic urinary tract problems, and being a melanoma
survivor.
So it occurred after reading your comment, that the reason I obsess
about the Diabetes and spend so much time posting about it here, while
thinking as little as possible about the other problems, is precisely
because Diabetes is the ONLY health condition I have where there IS
something I can do about it.
Focusing on the other conditions leads to feelings of helplessness.
Diabetes is a welcome change from that because there are things I can do
and they help me and others.

Jenny, this was exactly what my internist said when we had to choose to go back onto the
Prednisone amid my protests. The diabetes was the more treatable of all my illnesses. It is
*my* choice if I choose to learn as much as I can, and to do the best that I can with the
diabetes. At a recent appointment I told them I was breaking my neck to do my part with
everything, but I was not reaping the rewards of being better :o(, rather I seem to be
worsening. *frustrating & depressive* With the diabetes I can see the evidence on my meter from
my efforts; not so the other stuff which are also progressive diseases.
I have not been able to post as I would love to do, but I have found myself relating to you and
your problems; much similarity. Hang in there!!
