Wal-mart finally got the Splenda substitute in where I live. I haven't had a
chance to taste it yet, but the price is nice(er). A 9.7 oz bag of Splenda
is $7.88(Kingman, Az) and the Altern is $5.49 for the same size bag. Other
than the colors on the bag being different, you'd never know it wasn't
Splenda, Altern is probably Splenda's QA rejects lol
At an old job I had, we use to sell the same product to two different
companies, just the better product had slightly tighter spec. on the finish.
Basicly it just looked a little nicer.

Morton Salt does the same thing (so a friend tells me)! They just
shut down the line, put on new labels, and start it back up again!
Thanks for the news about the Splenda. Man, they're raking in the $$$!

Interesting. The patent holder of sucralose (Tate & Lyle) just won an
injunction against Wal-Mart over Altern. It seems that it contains a
sweetener that was found to be identical to sucralose, but was made in
China. http://tinyurl.com/qw3rc

I looked at that several weeks ago at Wal-Mart and the Altern and
Splenda in the small packets both have 3 ingredients and box of
pourable Splenda only has 2 ingredients. On the box of pourable
Splenda the ingredient list only has Maltodextrin and Sucralose.
On the box of packets there is a 3rd ingredient. Not sure what it
is but if I remember correctly it started with a Dex........
will be going there in an hour or so for groceries, so I will
check it out. I do not like using packets, as since I also cook
with Splenda it is easier to use the pourable stuff.

The 3rd item in the ingredient list is Dextrose.

Dextrose is another name for glucose. It is a simple sugar with a
high glycemic index. It is less sweet than sucrose (table sugar).
It is in the Splenda for baking (what you referred to as pourable
Splenda) to help preserve some of the physical characteristics of
baked products. Apparently, if you were to bake with the Splenda
packets the products would not look right or feel right in your
mouth. You are correct...it is better to use for cooking. But for
drinks like coffee, tea, etc., if you use the packets you will be
better off using the packets because the carbs/sugar will be
lower.
