Free carb/cal counter?

Type II and 40 lbs overweight.  I am determined to shed some weight. What I
need is a calorie and carb counter, in a compact book version or as a
download.

I downloaded and printed out the free USDA Nutritive Value of Foods. It
provides too much information that I do not need, which makes it bulky and
cumbersome.

Anyone know if there is a free download for a calorie/carb counter only?

Thanks

I bought a small book from a bookstore that I can read
easily anywhere. I used to take it out with me in my handbag
when I was first diagnosed. It was well under $10 here in
Australia and I am sure you could find similar. I found it
easier to manage than printed sheets.

OzGirl it is so good to see you.  I downloaded this newsgroup just to
say Hi to you and tell you I miss you in Chat.  Also, a Happy Belated
Birthday.  Come see us soon.  I really do miss you and ask about you
all the time.

thanks for the birthday wishes.

Anything you download that would be helpful would be bulky and
cumbersome because there are so many different kinds of food that you
would want the information on.

I would recommend you look into getting a calorie/carb pocket
calculator.  It will cost you a little, but it's a good investment in
your health and the most convenient.

This book isn't free but they have some available for as little as a
penny.  You have to pay shipping which is $3.79 but considering what
you get and the convenience of it, it's almost as good as free.

Funny....I've been eating LC for almost 5 years now and I never needed a
carry-with-me carb counter of any kind.

If the OP wants to lose weight, then the best plan is to simply not eat out
so much and learn to read labels.  Beyond that, the OP can use free online
software to count calories and or carbs.

I've never used one either, rarely do I even look things up as I've
learned over the years about most of the foods that I like.

Agree. I was just offering a couple of suggestions based on what he
asked for.

In the meantime I found an online counter at

http://www.foodfileonline.com

It has about 7000 food items and displays with numbers and neat pie-charts.

The same counter is available for free download at the same site. The
download file also has a number of filters for low cal, low carb etc.

Very nice and freeware. No ADS!

I like the tool.  Pie charts are great.  Not perfect but I have gotten some
useful info from it already!

Hi James

This will sound simplistic, but think about it for a while.
It worked for me.

Eat out less, cook for yourself at home more. Take
home-prepared meals for lunch at work when you can.

When I say cook for yourself - I mean that. Not your partner
cooking for you.

As a side effect, you can use programs like fitday then
without worrying about carrying a book around.

Without books, a simple guide when you are out. Eat less
than half of any meat/protein serve. Leave all starches and
breads on the plate. Eat every last green item (unless it's
the meat or a drink:-).

That's easier to do if you share your serve with your
non-dieting partner.

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

free download?  other than the USDA list?  not that I know of. However
the best book is at www.calorieking.com you can use their only
database but if you are going to buy the book, go and get it from any
local walmart or super k mart and it will be discounted right off the
shelf and no shipping charges.
