Just started taking Avandia, metformin, and Altace.  How long
does it usually take before the meds kick in?

Thanks!

Hi Karen welcome to our group.  I cant answer for any med besides
metformin and that took a few weeks,  But you must realize that the meds
are  not going to take the place of a proper diet and exercise.  they
are not a cure all.

please go to our website and check out Jennifers advice as to how to
start the process of controlling bgs.

Yes, I understand.  I'm hoping that they'll help, though.

Thanks!  I just started reading her site last night.  There is
sooooooooo much to learn.

Thanks, again!

Different times for each drug.  Avandia takes about 3 weeks to get to
full strength. Metformin kicks in faster but reaches maximum effect at
about 2 weeks, Altace should start kicking in within a few days.

Thanks a bunch!  One of the drugs has given me a case of
diarrhea.  (Only started taking them yesterday.)  I'm hoping that
will subside soon.

Thanks, again!

That's very likely the metformin.  Usually, you're told to start with
one pill per day for a week or so, and to gradually increase it as
symptoms subside.  Other times, folks start on the full dose and the
symptoms subside over time.

That makes sense.  Hopefully, I'll be one of the folks whose
symptoms subsides.

These are 1000 mg tablets, to be taken one time a day.  I wonder
if taking 1/2 in the a.m. and 1/2 in the p.m. would make a
difference?

Thanks!

Dividing the dose is definitely helpful, but if your tablets are the
time released ones, you can't cut them.  If the symptoms are awful or
continue, you might want to ask for non time released tabs, if XR or ER
is what you've got now.

P.S. what I left out earlier is that in an effort to avoid gastric
problems, folks typically take 500mg per day for a week or two, then
1000 per day, and so on, til the final dosage is achieved.

That makes sense.  I wonder why he just started me out with 1000
mg per day, right off the bat.

Belly discomfort seemed better last night.  Hopefully, I'm
adjusting to it now.

Thanks!

Folks here have said that using the "Extended Release" capsules
helps with the stomach problem.

Or ask to drop back and ramp up slower.  I was started at 250 mg a day
(1/2 of a regular 500 mg tablet).  I increased by 250 mg every three
weeks.  I'm now at 2000 mg a day.

Well, discomfort seems to be easing with time.  If it doesn't,
though, I'll be sure to call the doc about getting an adjustment.

Thanks!

It doesn't appear that I have XR or ER, but I'll check with the
pharmacist.  Thanks!
