I just looked at the EOB I got from my insurance and see that Minimed billed them $6,195 for my pump last year. Insurance paid them $4,719.75. The first 3 months of supplies were not included in that charge. I have no idea how much a Cozmo or Animas pump costs but I guess it's about the same.

And that was before the trade in rebate.

What is the retail price for the Cozmore system? I don't think any of the pump sites have actual prices listed, but I haven't really looked at them much. Insurance covered mine 100% so I wasn't too concerned about it. The $4,719 my insurance paid is what Minimed accepted as payment in full. The pump price included the infusion set inserter, BD Link meter (which I don't use), the cable and some software for downloading the pump. There were separate charges for the sets, reservoirs and even the IV Prep wipes.
Whatb pump did you trade in? My pump is still less than a year old so I have a long time before I get a new one. When that time comes, if insurance still covers it 100% I'd just keep the old one as a backup, just in case.

Seems they receive a different amount from different insurance plans. Same thing to the penny for an Animas 1250.

It's a [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] >arrive in time to give David the insulin needed to save his >life." I was reading yesterday with the TV on in the background. Just too lazy to get up and turn it off. There was a tear-jerker movie playing called "Escape from Wildcat Canyon" with Dennis Weaver playing the part of a diabetic (type unstated) grand-father stranded out in the snowy wilds for a couple of days with his son.
At one stage they went looking for berries for him to eat because he "needed sugar". Fair enough - I could buy that. The bit you'd find interesting was several hours later, when they had a bit of drama as he showed the kid how to inject him with insulin after eating only those meagre berries hours before and climbing up and down mountains in the interim.

The story mentions how the diabetic in question went so low (s)he passed out, had a seizure, was unresponsive etc. Why? Because that person desperately needed insulin! It just amazes me that now, with diabetes in the news ALL the time, they still get it wrong over and over and over. One time when I passed out at work, my co-worker said she was thinking of giving me insulin but she wasn't sure how much she should give, so she just waited for the paramedics. With newspaper articles like the above, I'm sure many people would think of doing the same thing.

It's just the morons reporting the stories that get it wrong. I don't recall reading any stories where someone with a dangerously high BG/DKA is reported as needing sugar, but I'm sure reporters will get to that eventually.

Ugh.. I see this all the time, too. It's downright frightening! There is real danger here: That someone will believe it, and try and aid someone having a hypo by finding their insulin and giving them a shot.

Because that price is then standard with that insurance company and every pump bought from that maker. I had a minimed 508 and traded it in towards the deltec cozmore. I'm sure the newer minimed pumps can compare feature and quality wise with the deltec but I got fed up with minimed because of double billing and crappy customer service.
After my company negotiated with cozmore they paid a little over 3 thousand and I only paid 280.00. when you can trade an old pump in towards a newer one depends on your insurance. With some it is between 3 to 5 years before they will authorize a trade up or upgrade. Usually around the time the warranty runs out.
If the old pump is good working condition, you might just do well to keep it for a back up as you mentioned. Their trade-ins don't get you but a few hundred dollars off the price of the new one.
