Mayo is #9
Harvard is not listed. Any idea why?

Mayo isn't really #9.
It says: "Note: Order does not reflect performance ranking. Hospitals
are ordered by Medicare ID."

And it looks like that ends up alphabetizing them by state.

Bruce, Harvard is not a hospital, it is a medical school.
The order is random

This list is not comprehensive. It is odd that New York has no
hospitals listed and yet we have some of the best in the country. I
dont know how this list was compiled.

Me neither.
"My" hospital -- the one where my endo is & where I go for my thryoid
cancer-related stuff, isn't listed & it's one of the busiest thyroid cancer
hospitals in the country -- and has a couple of Big Name Experts to boot.
There aren't any hospitals listed for DC & I think that GW & Georgetown are
pretty well regarded too.

I'm sure your hospital is excellent, however, if you use being busy as
a gage, then consider this;
Walmart is one of the busiest retailers, but I would not consider
their goods to be of highest quality. Cheap maybe!

I just posted it. I always thought Mayo was #1 by any standard.
Thought it was somewhat weird since NY has some of the best. If some
outfit ranked hospitals by grotesque expensive and criminally
profitable, then our beloved St Marys Regional Medical Center would
rank at the top in every rank. Some years back, radio personality
Paul Harvey said that our St Marys was the most expensive and the most
profitable in the US.

Beth Israel Deaconess which is on the list is one of the
Harvard-affiliated hospitals.
They don't have their own "Harvard University" hospital but work with
several of the major Boston hospitals.

As others have noted, the order is arbitrary by code number.
It's also a marketing thing - you have to pay for the
specific details.
It is also limited in scope:
"This study focuses on short-term, acute care, non-federal
U.S. hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of patients."
I'd wait until the newspapers pay their money - they will be
sure to selectively print some details.
One omission I noted was MD Anderson - one of the world's
leading CLL research and treatment hospitals. I'd want to
see more details of the methodology, which is only sketchily
mentioned here:
http://www.100tophospitals.com/studies/national05/methodology.asp
"The Study Universe
This study focuses on short-term, acute care, non-federal
U.S. hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of patients. The
database is based on public datathe Medicare Provider
Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data set, the Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Standard Analytical File
(SAF) Outpatient data set, and the Medicare Cost Report.
The Comparison Groups
Bed size, teaching status, and residency program involvement
have a profound effect on the types of patients a hospital
treats and the scope of services it provides. We assign each
hospital to one of five peer groups according to its size
and teaching status:
* Major Teaching Hospitals
* Teaching Hospitals
* Large Community Hospitals
* Medium Community Hospitals
* Small Community Hospitals"

Different group, different results... in a listing by one of the
weekly news magazines from about 6 months ago, the University of
Washington Medical Center was number 9 world wide... not even listed
on the groups pages...

On the web page -
Note: Order does not reflect performance ranking. Hospitals are ordered by
Medicare ID
To find out the ranking you gotta pay. Neat scam.

Maybe one of the best ways to get on the list is to be a
Solucient client.....
