Trinity - 09 Mar 2006 00:35 GMT Being anal retentive that I am, I have had my 7th consecutive A1C in the 5's. I have reduced my metformin to 500mg 1x/day. When I first reduced it from 2 pills to 1 pill, I just took the 1 pill at night. Now that I've refilled my prescription, now the instructions are to split the pill & take 1/2 tablet twice daily. Does it make a difference if I take 1 500mg pill at dinner vs. 2 250mg halves at breakfast, and then dinner? I would prefer not to do the added work of splitting the pills, but???? Any thoughts?
OT: because I have terrible PMS symptoms, I've decided to try birth control pills to see if it helps. Is there weight gain with taking the pill? Also I told my spouse that I cannot get pregnant now..... hmmmm I a lesbian anyways HA! She just chuckled at that one!
I do feel proud of my accomplishments and hope that I keep the complications at bay through all this hard work!
I also just got promoted to a higher position at my company and I feel really good about it! A quote that has helped keep things positive:

Cheri - 09 Mar 2006 01:10 GMT Sounds like you're doing great. Keep it up, and congrats on the promotion. :-) I take Metformin, but I've never split them, so dunno. I do think there is a warning about not splitting the extended release type though.

Great to hear all the good news.
I only started on metformin a few months back - so I don't have a lot of experience. However, the only reason I added it was to reduce my FBGs. I found by experimenting with different timings (all the permutations and combinations of breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper and pre- and post-meal) that mine was most effective taking one 500mg before starting dinner and the other with my supper.
That seemed to improve my FBG and at the same time give me less sensitivity to carbs at dinner.
YMMV.

My fbg has been fine, so maybe i'll stick the whole 500mg with my dinner to also allow a little more carbs. Cheers, Trinity

Breakfast 07:00 bacon and one egg, or stuffed mushroom or zapped casserole. Lunch 11:30 Open sandwich or bowl of soup or stir-fry. Late lunch/snack 15:00 Half an apple or avocado, or yoghurt and blueberries or similar. Dinner 18:00 meat - pack of cards size, salad or steamed/boiled veges. Supper 21:00 Muesli/nuts/psyllium mix.
With several micro-snacks between Lunch and Supper - a half-cracker and PB or blue cheese or vegemite, or a stalk of celery, or a few nuts, whatever.
Of course, there are exceptions. With the vampire act occurring this morning, followed by the CAT-scan, I fasted from 9pm last night until 1pm today. So I had an excellent large roast pork lunch:-)

I've been grinding about 2 tablespoons of flax seed and eating it with my cereal in the morning. That has been having a tremendous laxative effect that I think I'll donate the psyllium.

With the pills watch out for mood swings and sudden onset depression, which is something that the progesterone in the pills can cause in susceptible people. For me BP pills were like PMS in a tablet! I never could take them once they changed the formulation in the 70s to the "low dose" kind. Progesterone also raises my blood sugar.

I do hope they work for me, cuz I cannot stand the first 36 hours. And I have a new position that requires presenting in front of people and that's all I need is to be in that 36 hour window. :( Trinity

I shouldn't think that splitting a pill would be a bad idea, if you really have gone down to only one. The only thought I would have concerning taking it once a day would have to do with maintaining a consistent level of the drug in your system. You might get more peaks and dips in your systemic levels of metformin, thereby affecting the effectiveness of the medication you are taking.
Just a thought. Undoubtedly, there are some with better answers. It may be not such a big deal, anyway, when I think how long it takes for the metformin to start working.
Sorry, I cannot help you with the BC pills and PMS.... As a male, I am gender challenged on that issue! ;-)
I wish you all the best.

As far as the BC pills, just cross your fingers for me that they'll work ok. :)

Jennifer - 09 Mar 2006 19:42 GMT Great work on your diabetes!!!
As for the PMS... I have been taking Depo Provera shots for seven years now... because of extreme bleeding due to fibroids, my other options were all surgical, so I thought I'd give this a try. For the majority of women, monthly bleeding stops all together. That was the case for me, ergo no more anemia due to bleeding out every month! But the bonus also was, my PMS, which was admittedly not crazy bad, but noticable, is gone. No weight gain, though some report that it does have that effect.
Just some info.

It's the same drug mix as Depo-Provera; I was on that before, but it's being withdrawn in the UK in favour of the IUD, which is lower dose. I still have no mood swings and no periods, and now no injections every few weeks, so I'm very happy with it.
