Has Anyone Ever Used Penlac?

I have a fungus on/under a toe nail on my left foot.  The top part of
the toe nail is "very white" and has thickened up.  Has anyone ever had
a fungus like this and were you prescribed the med Penlac Nail Lacquer
for it?  If so, how long did it take for it to clear up?

Thanks for any info anyone can offer on this.

My Drs. refused to give me anything for fungal infection.  They said the
Penlac was not effective and the pills should not be given to diabetics.
They also said these were not effective.  My Dad tried the pills and they
only made him sick.  What works for me is to use vinegar soaks and also a
product called NonyX.  It's available OTC through various mail order
sources.  Have never seen it in a store.  It's expensive though, and you
have to keep using it or the fungus will come back.  Mine had all cleared up
and I stopped using the product.  Nails remained clear for several months
and then I noticed the problem coming back again.

What I do when I first start treatment is to soak some cotton pads in plain
white vinegar, then put them over the affected nails for about 10 minutes.
I do this every day for a couple of weeks.  I don't continue using the
vinegar any longer than that because it tends to dry out my skin too much
and that sets me up for other problems.  But it seems to be highly effective
in getting the NonyX to penetrate.  I use the NonyX at least once a day.
It's recommended that you use it after a bath or whenever the nails get wet.
I've been using it now for about 5 months since resuming treatment.  Started
with one really bad nail and two slightly affected nails on the right  foot.
Those have cleared up.  The big toenail on the left foot was also affected.
It seems to be taking longer to clear.  But now most of the nail is clear.
Only the very tip is affected now.  It is recommended that once the
infection is cleared, you continue to use the product every few days to ward
off another one.

I've also found that changing your shoes can help.  I used to have a pair of
shoes with a rubber cap across the toe and a lot of rubber up the sides of
the shoes.  These seemed to be making things worse, and I threw them out.  I
now try to change my shoes as often as I can, and I take them off when I'm
at home just sitting around.

Unless you take a systemic or parenteral anti-fungal drug to kill them,
fungal infections will never go away.  They are a parasitic infection
(or invasion).  They suffuse your body, growing through the skin and
muscle fibre, topical medications just keep them from coming to the
surface.

You can't stop treating it even if you can see no symptoms.  It doesn't
stop growing.

You're probably right, although with the treatment I described, I get no
symptoms, eventually and with continued treatment.  Also since no Dr. would
give me anything systemic and having not seen anyone have any success with
the systemic treatments, I had no choice but to treat it on my own.

Thanks so much for all of the info, Julie.  (:>))

I was a little concerned with the Penlac when I read something about
diabetes and this med.  My doctor is aware, of course, that I do have
diabetes.  I have been using Penlac for over a month and I am not seeing
much of a change, but I knew that it would take a while to clear up.
Penlac is "expensive", too, but my insurance does cover most of the
cost.  I am going to give it a little while longer and if I see
absolutely no change, then I will try what you are doing.  I am printing
your post out!

Thanks again, Julie.  I appreciate your response!

HELLO? dot?  Do I not even get a small thank you?  Jbove's post
basically agreed with mine (I too, unfortunately, have fungal
infections).  Was I no help?  Did I do something to upset you in some
way?  Anyhoo...  There are systemic drugs that can be prescribed that
can help and if your condition is bad enough, you should be able to get
them from your doctor.

I put cream on and spray every day.

Thank You Bob, your information was very valuable to anyone on the
newsgroup who has a fungal infection. Thanks again.

I really wasn't being. I have a fungus infection on my big toe nail, and
took in both Julie's and your advice. I had been putting Tea Tree oil on
it, as someone else suggested, but it wasn't helping much. I hope some
of the other suggestions will. Have a nice day Bob.

I'm sorry Cherie, really.  Maybe I've been doing this too long now and
am starting to see the worst in everyone.  I do have good intentions but
it's very tiring.  I might just have a few early nights and let you
"have at it" amongst yourselves for a while.

However, re the fungus, it's really rather nasty, as I said, I spread
cream and spray every day (for the last 15 years or so) but let me
forget one day or spend 12 hours on a flight and it attacks with a
vengeance.   If only I had it on just my big toe!

Well, a lot of us seem to be having a go at each other the past few
days, but I really do appreciate good advice when it becomes available.
I think you gave very good advice on the fungus. :-)

Bob, I have spent the past 10 minutes trying to find your posts! There
are a ton of posts on here to wade through.   I just saw Cheri's post
where she thanked you concerning this particular post of yours.  Sorry
that I did not respond, but I can't respond to something that I did not
know was here! I "do" appreciate your response! And, thank you very much
for the info.  Your info is very helpful.

From what I can find out (due to what Julie and you both posted) these
fungal infections are difficult to control and almost impossible to get
rid of.   I need to speak with my doctor next time I go in if this is
not "any" better.  I am a little reluctant to take oral meds (and my
doctor did not prescribe them), but I am going to ask him about this.

I hope that you continue to be sucessful in controlling your fungal
infections.  I guess that old saying, "there is a fungus among us"
(remember that one?) is the truth! They are going to be among us forever
once we get them!  (:>)

Thank you again!

Best,
Dot

Hey dot, it should be me that apologises.  I've become a bit sensitive
in the last few days, and I was reminded last night that someone I
conversed with early in my diagnosis didn't make it and I've mellowed a
bit I guess.  I'm off to bed now as my daughter won't let me watch the
"late night poker" on TV.  Night night.

No apologies needed, Bob.  Really.

Hope that you get a good nights rest! I am going to try to do the same.
