New to the group: Female, 59 yrs old;  type 2 diabetes controlled w/diet and
exercise, 4yrs in March;  last A1c 5.2.
Last Sunday I was struck w/a shooting pain headache around 3:am that lasted
for two days.  Dr gave me darvocet for a bit and now wants me to take an
antiseizure med called Lyrica for the neuro pain.  My question to the group
is; has anyone else on the group taking an antiseizure med for pain? How
does it affect your sugar, and has it helped your pain? I still have at
least a #5 headache going on, but not as bad as last Sunday.

Thank You - Molly

Molly, are you prone to these headaches.  Has the doctor suggested you
have an mri or a cat scan.  what is the cause of these headaches.  I do
not know about anti seizure meds for pain,  I just know that having
these types of headaches doesnt seem normal to me.

I hope you are okay.

I don't have many headaches, maybe a little one now and then, but nothing
like this. I did have 2 migraines about 20 years ago (they were memorable !)
and covered my whole head, not just half.  I posted here in a.s.d. because
the info on the med, said it was used for pain of diabetes neuropathy, and
pain from shingles. So far the dr and I haven't had a good chance to talk,
as the fog from the pain made me a "case".  No mri or cat scan mentioned.  I
hope to see him next week and have some good questions for him by then.

Lyrica (Pregabalin) is prescribed for nerve pain due to diabetic neuropathy
and postherpetic neuralgia and for helping control seizures in epilepsy.

I have never heard of prescribing it for headaches. You should ask your
doctor about it.

Hi Molly,

Have you been examined for a possible nerve impingement in your neck?
You see, some of the cranial nerves (including those that serve the
head and face) actually emanate from the neck... A person can
experience horrible pains and even paralysis, simply because of nerve
impingements in the neck....

Just a thought. Please keep us posted.

Thanks,

Will, T2

Was this a family doctor or a specialist?

Did you ask the doctor why he was diagnosing a sudden extremely painful
headache as neuropathy?  That sounds very unlike anything I've read
about neuropathy and I've been researching it because I have another
weird neuropathic thing going on.

Can you see a specialist?  Some of these seizure meds have a very spotty
history. Neuron tin, for example, has been implicated in suicide.
Prescribing very powerful drugs on the basis of a guess seems like maybe
not such a great idea.

I don't think she's saying that the doc thinks it's neuropathy (from a
diabetes standpoint).

Well, then it is even more inexplicable why he'd be prescribing an
anti-seizure medication for a sudden onset headache of long duration.

That not first line treatment for migraine by any means.

And migraine isn't the only explanation for persistant &/or sudden
headaches.

I think even a busy doctor would (should?) find a few minutes to actually
*see* the patient just to be sure it isn't something really serious.

This is interesting to me. A few weeks ago a friend's
husband woke to a fierce headache, extremely red face and
vomiting. He was taken to the doctor who sent him
immediately to the hospital with a suspected aneurysm. His
BP was sky high, they did CT scan and MRI and found nothing
but he had a follow up with a neurologist a few days later
(the doctor got him an early appt because they felt it was
an emergency). Meanwhile he is taking two kinds of BP med,
BP is back to normal, nothing has been found other than he
is "pre-diabetic". The point to the story is that a) the
doctors felt it was very serious and acted upon it
immediately and b) the doctor took the steps to ensure an
early appt with the neuro. I am rather surprised the OP's
doctor didn't intervene to get the neuro appt. It is done
every day. Left to the patient it can take months, no matter
how important and urgent you feel it is.

Molly, sudden, severe head pain lasting two days needs a diagnostic
workup, perhaps by a neurologist.

Absolutely right, Susan.  This needs to be looked at by a neurologist
ASAP--it could be very serious.  Molly, did your MD do any tests on you?

No tests so far, getting into see the dr. is almost impossible right now for
some reason. But I do trust him he has helped me before and set up apts. to
other drs  for other problems (depression & diabetes etc). So far after
taking this med for a day it has cured my insomnia... LOL...  my headache is
down to about a 3 now.  I am going to try and get an apt. this week and like
I said, have some good questions for him. IF I can stay awake long enough to
ask them.  Thank you for your support and pointing out that I should be seen
by a neuro.

Welcome to the group!  They tried me on Neurontin for pain and it nearly
killed me.  All sorts of horrible side effects.  Then end of it came when I
felt compelled to hurl myself from the upstairs window.  Luckily it also
made me so dizzy and dysfunctional that I couldn't get out of bed.  The med
didn't affect my BG at all.  But pain can raise BG.

After three days on the med.. and trying to get over the dizzyness, my BG is
up a few points this morning.  But my head pain is almost gone.  What a
relief.

you should still get checked out.  it could be caused by something
totally unrelated to diabetes.  Such as an injury.  The meds may be
masking the symptoms.

Just be certain of the diagnosis.

I take them for neuropathy along with evening primrose oil with quite
a bit of success.  Helps as a preventive for the chronic migraines I
get as well.  When I do get the migraines, Zomig works best to knock
them right out if I catch them before I start vomiting.

Zomig is a great med for knocking out migraines and cluster headaches
within minutes of taking the med.  and it is not a Narcotic.  Ask your
doc about it.

Did you and the doc actually rule out other potential causes?  pinched
nerve, slipped disc, neck injuries?

He didn't have time to look me ALL over. I see him pretty regular, so he
knows most parts of me.. LOL...  I am seeing him on Wednesday of this week
and talk over meds again (now that I make more verbal sense).  I got in last
week on a cancellation from someone else and I just wanted to see him for a
massive shooting pain headache and ear ache...  thinking it was sinus
infection.  I am sure since then, he has been making plans for me this week
as in tests and blood donations to the vampire that works there etc.
Meanwhile, my head pain is almost gone, except if I touch that particular
part of my head then the skin burns and my hair hurts.  Thanks for all the
suggestions I will let you know how the apt works out.
