Hi gang, I have been having troubles with my fastings again as usual.
My morning fastings in Dec. and Jan were in the 160 range. :-(
For some odd reason it just decided to jump. So I called the Dr. and
increased the glipizide from 2.5 to 5 mg once a day
The lipidor I was taking caused too much muscle cramps for me and I
discontinued using it. The Dr. put me on a differant med for the
cholestrol.
So, I did not ask what the cholestrol was doing since I know it would
be up from discontinuing the lipitor.
A1C was 7.1  down from 7.6  which is a good sign that everthing is
getting back to my abby normal self.
It has been a long hull for me since being diag Dec. 2000 but I want to
thank everyone here that has helped keep my sanity going.
God is good.

The never ending battle

Ira, it is a neverending battle for sure.  But as long as we try out
best every day, we are ahead of the game.  Your numbers are going down.

Stay on target, Ira.... Keep those BGs and the 6.5 a1c in your
crosshairs...

Don't ever give up. We are here for you!

Thanks for all the support you guys give.  I am not giving up.
I have two very close friends that have lost toes and foot parts
because of not watching the fastings. It is a good reminder for me to
keep in control.
I am not a morbid type person but seeing them helps me in a morbid way
:-(

I don't think it's morbid at all. All those complications, especially
when seen up close and personal, are a heck of a motivator. I wish you
the best with your control.

Ira,

Is there any reason why your doctor doesn't prescribe a basal insulin
for you?  Your blood sugar is still over even the ADA's anemic targets
and well over the AACE suggested target.

Basal insulin, done right, will bring down your fasting blood sugar. The
injections don't hurt with today's thin syringes. And you can tailor the
dose more precisely than you can the insulin generated by the glipizide.

If your doctor is not a diabetes specialist, perhaps it is time to see
an endocrinologist and get his help. You're motivated and understand why
control is important. So you shouldn't have to settle for mediocre
control when much better control is attainable!

Why not try splitting up your dosage of glipizide into two 2.5 doses ,
taking one in teh
am and one either with dinner or before bed?  I talke 1000mg of Metformin
EX wice a day and 1 mg of amaryl just before bed to help with my mornign
bgs.  It worked for me.  I woudl not take the whole dose late at night as
it might drive you too low.

Also I never heard of a 700mg dose of Metformin, though I could just
be misinformed. Could it be that you are taking 2 -850mg doses?

Knowledge is power Ira. You might want to ask your doc for copies of
all test results. Chart them and you can follow trends much more
easily. Personally I would have wanted to know my cholesterol numbers
to see how much difference the Lipitor actually made, then you could
compare what the new statin did for you. JMO of course. Congrats on
the improving A1c. Light at the end of the tunnel.

Check with your doctor of course, but consider taking _all_ your
Metformin at bed time.  This med depresses the liver's glucose
manufacturing which turns on at night while your sleeping (my consoler
said for most people this is 2:00am).

When my meds were rescheduled to (850mg Metformin tabs) one at dinner
and the other 2 at bed time, my fasting BG was down 2 mornings later
and remains in the safe range (if I can leave the apple pie at dinner
alone).

Hi Ira

I take 2x500mg metformin generic. After some initial
experimentation I take one a half-hour before dinner, about
5:30 pm, and the other with my late cereal mix supper about
9:30 pm.

That seems to give me better FBG, which was the reason I
started on the met. It had crept over 6(108) and I prefer to
see it under that in the morning. A side effect has been an
ability to eat a few more carbs with dinner without spiking
and a reduced BG rise after that evening cereal.

It had no affect on my A1c over the first three months of
use. I'll know in a couple of weeks if the next three months
had any affect.

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.
