Not to walk a total 40 city blocks in one afternoon. I don't have my summer
walking legs yet. Oh boy, am I feeling it now. OUCH!!!!!
20 blocks to, walking against a super strong (the kind you have to lean
into) wind. 20 blocks back. Warmer weather today and a touch of spring
fever hit. Thought I was in a bit better shape.
BG's great today though!

It woulda been a better story if the wind changed and it was in your
face both ways.

It felt like it. Believe me! Walked from the Grand Avenue Mall all the way
to Ruby G's for a coffee then walked all they way back to the Grand Avenue.
It's a trek.

Whew!
I was afraid you walked 40 city blocks out away from home and were not
totally lost with no hope of finding your way back. ;-)

Dear Colleen
Maybe this sounds stupid, but as a europen I have to ask?
How long apr is one city block?
I do know that in i.e. NY one block is from one crossing street to the
nest,
bur how long in meters/yards?
Here in Denmark we do not use that expression at all, but I now it from
US-movies etc.
Hope to learn something here..
Thanks and have a wonderfull weekend

12 city blocks are equal to approximately 1 US mi. For me it was close to a
4 mile walk. My body's not used to that.

The short blocks not the long avenues

city, but in Manhattan in NYC 20 street blocks are 1 mile and 6 numbered
crosstown avenue blocks are a mile. Makes it esy to know how far you are
walking.

A block really is the distance from one street to the next. It varies
quite widely. I always planned on 12 blocks to the mile, or about 150
meters. The block I live on is about 100 meters long. Across the
street, it is about 300 meters.

Different cities, different measurements.
Even in Manhattan (which would be very different than in Queens or
Staten Island).
If you're going Avenue to Avenue, they range. They're longer closer you
are to 5th... and get shorter farther away.
But up and downtown blocks in NYC (the numbered blocks) are generally 20
blocks to the mile.

Don't walk 40 blocks until the summer : )
I did something similar on Thursday - I'm a country girl, used to walking on
grass paths or mud. I was in London for a meeting, and snuck out for a walk
at lunchtime - OW! Those newfangled pavement things are hard : ) (Not to
mention the posh shoes...)

A spring-like day in Jan. in Milwaukee, Wisc. This time of year I take full
advantage of anything >32F. We've had in incrediably warm Jan. this year.
Of course, Dec. was record cold so it's evened out.
We get spring beginning sometime between May 30th and June 1st. Summer goes
through the 4th and fall begins the day after. ;>)
Climate change is hitting our area because are winters for the past 5 yrs.
or so have been very mild compared to what they used to be. I'll take it!

I do know what Wisconsin is like... I was born in Madison. That's also
where I spent part of my childhood... I remember one time it was -40F,
and there was ice in the toilet in the mornings on more than one
occasion.
We still have some family connections in Rapids, through one of my
sisters, so I look forward to a big box of cheese every Christmas.
Other than the cold, Wisconsin is a very nice place to live.
The weather here on the east coast has been mostly mild, also, this
year. There have even been a few days in the 60's in January. The
water may be too cold, but it is very nice walking weather most days,
except when it's raining.
How's the bi-polar thing, Colleen? My Rachel is having a little
trouble with her medications again, so she's been a little manic
lately. Then she sleeps for 18 hrs at a stretch. Because of the
unstable situation with the meds, she needs to stay close to her
doctors right now and won't be coming to visit for a few more weeks.
Well, I wish you a really good Saturday!

My bipolar is doing well. I have found a winning med combo. It took a long
time but it's worked well for 3+ years now. I've only had one breakthrough
episode and the was at the beginning of the med combo. I did a lot of my
own research on the meds with regard to what my experiences were and my
adverse reactions to the different meds. I've been on most of them.
Lithium was the first mood stablizer that worked well. Before that I had
never known what a long term stable mood felt like. Unfortunately (or
fortunately) I could no longer tolerate it. That's when I researched
Trileptal. It's a chemical cousin to Tegretol, which is an anticonvulsant
used to treat bipolar. It's worked! I still get mood episodes but no
longer the paralizing depressions or the year long hypomanias followed by a
crash and burn. Keep persevering in the med dept. regarding your daughter.
Does she also do talk therapy? The talk therapy doesn't do much for the
chemical aspect of bipolar but it did teach me to recognize my symptoms and
be or pro-active rather than re-active in treating my illness. I'm glad
that your daughter is smart enough to stay close to her pdocs. Good ones
can be invaluable in treating the illness. It's very much like treating
diabetes. The doctors are the assistants in the treatment and the patient
maintains the proactive roll.
Keep me posted on what's happening with her. There are a lot of online
support groups if she does the puter bit. Those may help her at least find
others who are in the same position she is. However, if she's really
vulnerable to the troll BS that abounds, I'd recommend not doing them at
this time. There are a lot of anti-med trolls on some of the groups. Makes
our trolls looks like intelligent life forms!

Today it is about 55F, but raining like a bitch. Tomorrow is supposed
to be all day sunshine and in the low 60's. No snow yet this winter.
Mid February and the tulips will be in bloom in the back yard. I pity
you Colleen.

Our tulips are usually mid April. There's no spring in Milwaukee. We
usually have really nice autumns though. Mid Sept. to mid Oct. is usually
very nice here. By the third week of Oct. the winter weather can hit. This
year it stayed nice until Nov. We had like 70 on a Sunday and by the
following Sat. is was around 30. Don't like the weather in Milwaukee? Hang
around for 5 minutes, it'll change.

Hey, thanks for the reminders everyone. It's cloudy and rainy today so no
40 block walks. How long can you count a long walk in retroactive exercise?

Anything worth doing is worth overdoing. In a week, I'll be overdoing sun
and sand. Hopefully the sunblock will work. It's a dress rehearsal for
summer, as your walk. A good kind of hurt...
