I have been having a terrible time this winter with my eyes drying out
and feeling like they are full of grit.  I have been running humidifiers
through the house and taking flax oil, which is my usual solution, but
it isn't helping enough.

Does anyone here have that problem and have you any solutions?

The eye doctor recommends drops, but they do not help me at all. I've
tried at least 5 different brands of them.

That gritty dry-eyed feeling could be signs of Graves' exophthalmos.
Have you had your thyroid function checked lately?  Since I've been
boning up on hyperthyroidism the above is what immediately sprang to
mind.

Of course, it could be any number of things.

Wooly,

I've had my thyroid function checked several times in the last 3 years
and it was never abnormal. I've even had the more expensive Free T3 test
done. So I don't think that is it.

Jenny I used to have that problem back twenty years.  tt was torture.  I
used a product called natural tears .  There are many artificial tears
on the market,  Have you tried them. Visine doesnt do it.

Me too. I turned out to be allergic to the preservatives used in most of the
brands, I had to find a preservative-free one.

I strongly suggest you see your ophthalmologist about this. Dry eyes can be
a symptom of all kinds of things, some of which can seriously mess with your
eyesight.

Nicky,

Thanks for your concern!

I asked the ophthalmologist about this problem when I saw him last year.
He gave me the usual suggestion to try the drops and a free sample of
yet another over-the-counter brand, which like the others, irritated
them. He didn't seem to think it was a sign of anything wrong with my
eyes.

I use a brand with no preservatives when I'm really stressed, though it
doesn't seem to help much.

By now I've consulted a very smart optometrist, the ophthalmologist and
the family doc and none seem to think it is anything unusual. I have had
this problem on and off for years, so it probably is just part of the
fun of getting older.

You know, I'm becoming less and less impressed by that argument - maybe as I
get older : )  If you've had it for years and it's stayed at the same level,
maybe - but you sound like it's taken a turn for the worse recently?

Well, the "recently" is "since heating season started" and if the level
of oil in our tank is anything to go by, we used a lot more heat this
past December than is usual.

I am pretty sure I've had this problem most winters, but it is
impossible to remember if it was this bad or less, or what. (The
"impossible to remember" part is yet another part of the delights of
getting older. <g>)

It has been warm the past two days (insanely warm. It felt like June
today!) and the eyes have been a lot happier. So it probably is our
radiator system outpacing the humidifiers.

See, it's your comfort cooling system getting older, not you : )

Loretta,

Years ago they used to sell some product that would help me a lot with
irritated eyes. But nothing they sell now does.  I have tried every kind
of ingredient mix they sell OTC.

Jenny, I have been diagnosed with dry eyes.for several years and I saw a
brochure
that said to get the tear ducts blocked.  It was kind of like pressing a
Teflon plug into
a hole that is too small. This doctor managed to leave the plugs sticking
about
1/16 of an inch.  This was very uncomfortable so I went to a different
doctor that is
very knowledgeable about diabetes and I get an appointment every year.  I do
have good insurance
including Medicare. (I got the plugs removed)
This doctor wrote me a prescription so I could get Genteel from the VA.  As
you said
this helps very little so he prescribed Restasis.  I'm not getting the same
results as the
lady in the commercial and I notice that when I eat spicy foods or my wife
peels an onion
it gets much worse.  I read a recent article saying dry eyes is associated
with diabetes
and you could probably pull up many articles on Google. I find myself
batting my eyes
and holding them closed a lot which gets me accused of, sleeping, by my
better half.

I had that problem for years, but don't now.  At least not most of the time.
Not sure what caused it or made it go away.  Now it's only a problem
sometimes during allergy season or when I've been on the computer for a very
long time with no breaks.

What my eye Drs. have told me to do is rinse my eyes at least twice daily
with baby shampoo.  Be sure to use the tear free kind.  And I've tried a
variety of different artificial tears.  One Dr. suggested that I use the
Thimerisol (single serve) bottles.  Although they say each bottle is only
for one use, the Dr. said it is fine to re-use provided it is used within 24
hours and the bottle is kept upright and clean.  It was also suggested that
I use the thicker kind at night.  Those didn't work for me at all and only
caused more irritation.

Now when I have a problem, I rinse my eyes, use the tear drops, and if that
doesn't help, then I use some allergy drops.

In dry weather I get dry eyes. Running humidifiers and a hepa air cleaner
helps some. Cleaning my eyelids daily helps a lot too. I use Neutrogena bar
soap, with clean hands make a lather with the Neutrogena. Close your eyes
and clean horizontal only for at least a minute, doc recommended 5 minutes
but I can't do it that long. Then rinse well. You can also use OCuSOFT Lit
Scrubs but they are expensive. The Neutrogena works just as well. Avoid
rubbing or touching your eyes with anything except a clean tissue.

I also use Refresh tears in the day when needed. If it's really bad I use
GenTeal Moderate. For bad nights I use GenTeal Gel. When driving, I use
Nature's Tears, a spray that can be sprayed across both eyes in a second.

Keeping my eyelids cleaned helped the most, it took a week or two for that
to show results.

Anon,

Thanks for your suggestion about cleaning the eyelids with Neutrogena.
That sounds well worth a try!

If I spend too much time on the computer my eyes get dry and gritty feeling.
I use refresh eyedrops or put a hot washcloth over one eye at a time and
then massage my eyelids.  It's supposed to stimulate tears, oils or
something...I forget, but it works.

For nighttime I use Refresh Celluvisc...it is preservative free. Daytime I
use Refresh Plus...they are also preservative free. My corneas have become
scratched because of my dry eye.
