My SIL has shingles. My Dad and I were talking about it last night, and he
said he had them as a young man in the RAF; the common cure for them amongst
the pilots was to take an unpressured plane up for a while.
Do any of you flyers recognise this? Have any idea if it's more than an old
wives' tale, and if not what the mechanism is? In my head, shingles and
neuropathy are linked under a "nerve damage" banner - might there be a
market for depressurising diabetics? : )

Can't respond to the "depressurizing" of the nerves. However, shingles
is the resurgence of the virus that causes chicken pox. After we have
chicken pox, we've got gobs of antibodies to keep the virus squashed
down, but as we age, those antibodies lessen and voila, shingles.
Sometimes it's not just a matter of age, but anything that causes
immunosuppression, including stress. I believe it's really an
inflammation of the nerves, although this no doubt causes some nerve
damage. My aunt was given an antidepressant for pain management
(despite the fact that she wasn't depressed). Sounds odd, but it
worked for her. I believe the antidepressant was in the class of
serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Apparently a lot of the pain of shingles recurrences can be cut down IF
you manage to notice the blisters BEFORE they start to weep the very
first time you get them, and get medical attention. IF anti-virals are
given at this point, this is a very high chance of avoiding damaging the
nerves which causes the terrible pain associated with shingles.

Shingles just doesn;t get the respect it deserves a s a medical malady.
I don't really follow tennis, but a friend told me she was wathcing a
tennis tournament and the young guy who beat Andre Agassi reminded he
of me. Why? In an interview he said that he had had shingles, and had
had a broken neck, and the shingles was far worse.
Granted there could be all kinds of degrees of broken necks, but it
gives a pretty good idea of just how painful and maddeining shingles
can be. Been there, done that, still scratching 2 years later--actually
2 years later, today.
