Hi .. I started Avandia in early November.  I've been on Glucophage
for many years.  I have now gained about 12 lbs. while watching my
diet. So when I see my physician next week I would like to go off
Avandia and try something different.  Yes, it is helping my readings
but the weight gain is nuts.  Any suggestions?
Thanks

Anything that gets the excess glucose OUT of your bloodstream and INTO your
cells is going to cause weight gain, even without changing your diet.
Avandia is no different.   The good news is that you are *probably* at the
end of the weight gain from Avandia, as you have been on it about 2 months
now.

When I started Avandia about 6 years ago, I gained 10 pounds or so in the
first couple of months, then stabilized again.  But the reduced BGs, IMHO,
were worth it.

Rage, I refused to take avandia for that reason alone,  I am fat enough.
I have freinds on it and they also have gained a lot of weight.  Ask
your doctor if you can take another medication instead of the avandia if
it bothers you.

I didn't have any weight gain problems with it, thank God, but my
major beef is the expense of it.  That's why I am going to ask the
doctor for something else next time I have to go into see him.  Does
anyone know of what can be subsitituted for it and works about the
same?

Weight gain is a known side effect of this med.  Have you tried Metformin?

Glucophage is metformin.

I had no problem with weight on Avandia, but when I switched to
Actos..........About 30 lbs added *without* edema which is a known
side effect for some people. I have taken it off, but it took quite a
while. In the end though I would rather be in control but overweight
than slender and out of control.

I gained weight and got total body swelling (edema) from Avandia, darn
it, 'cause it helped my blood sugars.  Actos gave me terrific
headaches, possibly also from fluid retention.  I use Byetta now,
injectable med for T2.  It's expensive unless your insurance covers it
well, and it has its own side effects, as do all medicines.

I was interested in Byetta for it's weight loss properties, but my A1c
is too low for it to be prescribed to me. When Levemir comes into
common use, I plan to switch my Lantus for it. According to the people
I have talked to, they do lose some weight on it.

Any clue when Levemir will be on the market in the U.S.? Months ago Dr.
Biggs posted it would be available in a few months.  I haven't heard
anything further.

The way my insurance works, they won't cover any new drug for 6 months
after it has been on the market. They just added Byetta to their
formulary this past month. It looks like it would be just the ticket for
me, since I need something long-lasting that will fade out early enough
to avoid 3AM hypos. If I can keep the blood sugars flat by 10 PM, I'm
okay the next morning.

Levemir won't be available until at least 6/2006.  Novo Nordisk is
executing its last trial run with patients and is currently available
through some endocrinologists (you can ask your doctor if they have
it).  Right now the problem is getting insurance companies to cover it.

I just switched from Lantus to Levemir (in Kansas City) -- but have to
obtain it directly from my endo.  The biggest difference is the lack of
burn when injecting.  I prefer two injections per day, because it has a
slightly larger peak than Lantus does in larger doses (but less than
NPH).

Oh yeah -- doctors are also in the process of being educated about
Levemir.  Seminars are taking place all over the US to educate
endocrinologists about Levemir.  It's all about the marketing right
now, to both endos and insurance companies.

Thanks for the update. It is very helpful.
