Dr. says my iron is low

If things don't apply to me at the time, I don't really pay attention,
so if this is a common subject, forgive me. But my dr. says my iron is
low and that I should take an iron supplement. I am a meat eater & so
I'm a little confused about this. Is this another thing that some
diabetes go through?

I haven't looked into this much yet, so bare with me.

Cheers,

I have anemia.  I just spoke with my Dr. about it today.  He said it is not
common to diabetics but it is common to women who are still menstruating.
In my case, I think it might be from my milk allergy.  According to the book
I have on allergies, a dairy allergy can cause internal bleeding as well as
malabsorption.  And in looking back, there was a 2-3 year time span when I
didn't have anemia.  During that period of time, I was on a weight loss
diet.  Very low calorie and almost entirely vegan.

I don't know if I have anemia as the message just said that my iron was
low & to take an iron supplement. I see her again end of March so.... I
have been having horrible periods this year, so not sure if it has
anything to do with that.

Trinity,

Many years ago (dinosaurs were still chasing us) I
developed a severe anemia because of bleeding
fibroids.  I had mentioned that to my doctor.  It was
ignored and I ended up in difficulty.  Please make
sure that that source of bleeding is checked out.
It could have been easily treated for me. OTOH,
twenty-something years later, I was dx'd with DM. No
connection. Good luck.

Heavy or long periods can certainly cause anemia!  I am allergic to bee
stings and have had to get cortisone shots if I get stung.  When I was
younger, the shots really affected my periods.  I went for a year of almost
solid periods.  They would stop for a day or two then start up again and the
flow was quite heavy.  I had very severe anemia then from all the blood
loss.

Is anemia a temporary or permanent thing? :( It would be depressing to
start to add ailments and a life full of diabetes. SIGH

It can be temporary. My ferritin levels have been low all my life, and I
can't take iron supplements due to sensitivity to ferrous sulfate,
ferrous fumarate and ferrous gluconate (not a histamine response, but
serious nausea, vomiting and fainting).

A doctor told me years ago to reheat tomato sauce in a cast iron
skillet. The tomato will strip iron molecules from the pan. My gp told
me recently that beets are a good source. Liver, of course.
Canned black olives are preserved with ferrous gluconate. I can't eat
more than a few.

My father used to laughingly threaten to give me the same iron that's
given to piglets. They often suffer from life-threatening anemia. It's
finely ground iron, the metal. Yuk, but it'd probably work the best.

I'll get more info on Thursday. Hopefully it's just period related and I

It can be temporary.  I have been diagnosed with anemia three times in my
life -- when I was a freshman in college, when I was about 25 years old, and
again just a few months ago.  The first incident lasted a couple of years,
the next one 3 or four years, and this time I seem to be doing well after
only 2 months of iron supplements.  The doctor told me today that my count
is now within normal range, and he told me to reduce the iron supplements
from 2 a day to 1 a day.

You need vitamin C in your diet in order to absorb iron, otherwise you
don't absorb it:

Yes, that's correct about Vitamin C.  I was diagnosed with anemia a couple
of months ago and first went through various tests to rule out bleeding.
So, I also was given a prescription for iron supplements -- iron tabs twice
a day plus Vitamin C once a day to help with absorption of the iron.  In
resposne to Trinity's question:  I also wondered about a possible link
between anemia (iron, in her case) and diabetes, but I haven't seen any real
evidence of it.

I have had slight anemia before and after diabetes was diagnosed. If
Trinity checks her labs, you will probably find low iron (ferritin),
hemaglobin, hemacrit, and Red Blood Cell count (RBC). They tend to go
hand in hand. When you take iron supplements, remember that Vitamin C
taken with them helps absorption. However, do not take dairy products or
caffeine at least one hour before or after, as they block absorption.

I didn't know about dairy products.  I have been taking an iron tablet with
breakfast, so it sounds like I am taking it at the wrong time.  That makes
it difficult to take both tablets (twice a day) with meals, which is when I
try to take most medication.  I also take calcium at the same time.  I just
did a search based on your message, and it seems that calcium can also
inhibit absorption.  So, I need to change my timing.  Thanks!

Hmm, seems the addition of pills/vitamins etc becomes more complex.
With food
without food
do not take with dairy
take at night
take in the morning
one a day
two a day
three a day
every 6 hours
every 12 hours

Waaa,
Trinity who is feeling down b/c she got rejected for Life Insurance even
though my labs for the last 1.5 years has been excellent.

My November labs (minus Ferritin - I'll get that result on Thursday) are:
Hemoglobin 152 lab range 115-165
Hematocrit: 0.429 lab range 0.37-0.47
RBC 4.74 lab range 3.80-5.80

It could be fluctuating with my periods then, if my iron was low, the
blood test was a few days before my period????

I'll see what my dr. says on Thursday.

Thanks,

Are iron supplements a prescription? I'm seeing my dr. on Thurs to discuss.
I will also bring up my heavy periods.

Iron supplements are available over the counter (without prescription).  My
doctor wrote a prescription, but that was only to give me the necessary
information, because a prescription was not needed when I bought the pills.
He had me take Ferrous Sulfate 325mg twice a day plus 500mg of Vitamin C
once a day to help with absorption.  Also, they are not expensive.  I just
wrote another message in which I said that the doctor told me today to
reduce the iron supplements to one per day because my readings are now
within normal range.

Thanks,
Well I made an apt. b/c the dr.'s message was to take iron supplement.
No info on what dosage and to take it with vit C. So I will also get a
copy of what my iron lab test was as well.

In my case my body does not absorb iron well.  You can also ask your
doctor about running an Iron absorption test.  This test runs for 2 to
3 hours.  What is done is:
1.  blood test is ran
2.  you drink some nasty tasteing solution.
3.  wait for a period of time and run a blood test.
4.  2 and 3 are repeated.

I saw my dr. today. She gave me a prescription for an iron supplement. I
also bought vitamin C. I'm sure from now until my next apt. on march
1st, we'll see how it goes and I'm sure she'll test the ferritin again.

Some people lack "intrinsic factor" which enables them to process
iron--lack of Vit B12.  So some need B12 shots in order to absorb iron.
If you aren't benefiting from iron or Vit C, maybe you need the
injections.

Got my labwork on the iron/B12:
Ferritin: 12 lab range 13-145
Vitamin B12 840 lab range >131

so my B-12 is fine, but I am taking 1000mcg per day.
I got a prescription for the iron pills: Slow Fe 160mg to be taken 1x
per day. I also bought the vitamin C.

I just need to figure out a time that I have an empty stomach so I can
take them. Kinda hard when I try to eat every 2-3 hours......
